Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My main job is building products as part of the TCA system for trains. I mainly focus on the control unit part of this system however I can also build the other parts. I am also responsible for the repair of road products when they stop working which is mainly fault finding broken PCBs
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
It's okay, I find a lot of the classes are unnecessary as we go into college just to do work that could be done at home as it seems very self taught which I am not a fan of. When you live far away from college this costs a lot in petrol for unnecessary classes. Other aspects are good such as the maths and electronics units in college

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt more advanced soldering techniques such as harwin lug soldering and terminal soldering. I have also been trained as a CIS in the IPC 610 and 620 certifications which allows me to inspect other peoples soldering and wire crimping and pass them off. I have also learnt how to fault find on PCBs by looking at soldering quality, polarity of components and continuity of the PCB tracking

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
It wasn't the best at first as it seemed they forgot about my apprenticeship side of the programme and so I've only just started doing all of the apprenticeship stuff which has increased my time pressure. The final unit in college should be one of the first ones as it is the worst one and is a massive bulk of words which no one wants to do last.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
They allow me study leave which helps with getting to college as it is a 45 min - 1 hour drive.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The apprenticeship tutor is very helpful
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
They're not really related, a lot of the college is mechanical engineering or word based engineering whereas I focus on electronics in work
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Not really but there are events in work which are good such as the decathlon and bbq
