Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
The role consists of managing multiple projects you may have during that time period. This can include responding to emails, site visits, carrying out audits, tender submissions, etc. You may have time during the day to complete your school work. You will also be liaising with different departments regarding the projects you are managing, ensuring they meet compliance.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoy my programme a lot as it allows you to cement a legacy through replacing or installing new machinery / plant. Moreover, the role gives you a sense of purpose as you are indirectly serving the needs of 16million people. It reinforces the feeling that the work you are completing positively affects London and Thames Valley.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I believe this course teaches a lot from using various programs in uni such as AutoCAD and Revit to developing the required understanding of certain engineering principles and various machinery on site. This course is extremely well for developing social skills as you are required to liaise with different departments, engage with various firms and contractors.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I would say the university course wasn't the best fit for the role I carry out day to day. However, I am glad I did that course as it gave more of a theoretical understanding of Civil Engineering, which definitely reinforces and boosts my knowledge when it came to managing projects. However, to my understanding, I believe they have changed providers which may be a much better fit for the current role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Thames is a great place to work and the work life balance here is amazing. That being said, I was given a lot of support from my employer when it came to uni deadlines as I was allowed to spend some of my working time to focus solely on uni work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
My training provider was LSBU and they were neutral. Personally, their communication was not the best and when it came to the quarterly skills review, they were not on top of that. I believe it came down to having not enough staff for my cohort as well as not updating their calendar for allowing students to be able to book in reviews.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
As previously stated, I do not think the course was the right fit for the role I carry out. Due to the course being quite technical and my role being more on the managerial side, what I learnt from it was not the most fitting or applicable. However, doing this course gave me the theoretical knowledge of engineering disciplines and practices which have boosted my understanding.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are a lot of extra curricular activities such as social gatherings, annual raft racing, and a lot of networking events. This is quite important as it allows us to get involved with events which can possibly used to further develop skills, especially social skills such as speaking and gaining confidence.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Thames Water to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would 100% recommend Thames Water to a friend. Thames Water is a fantastic place to work as the work you are carrying out directly affects the lives of 16 million people, which gives you a purpose. Moreover, the work life balance is unmatched to any other firm / company I have seen. This job allows you to have a personal and social life, which to me is very important.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
When applying to any company, it is important you familiarise yourself with the actual company, doing adequate research on the company, their values, what they do, etc. Research on the role you are applying for and take your time with the application process and any tests you might need to do. I believe there are only 2 stages, a phone interview and an assessment center. The best tips for these are again, take your time with answering questions and prepare yourself by doing research.
