Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work in the safety components team as an engineer, and this involves me solving issues/potential issues that engineers who work on upcoming vehicle programme are/will face. My day-to-day jobs include interacting with engineers in my team, working with CAD software, working on assignments that the university set, and mapping out the tasks I must do to complete my projects.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme as I get a sufficient amount of work to keep me busy, however due to the team and area of the business I work on, the deadlines for my project can be flexible which accommodates for the consciously changing workload I get from university.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The main new skills I've learnt is operating CAD software and being able to not only create component using it, but measure and analyse pre-existing components. The skills that I have developed are being able to critically and logically break down a project into small and manageable tasks, time management, working and communicating within a team environment, and adaptability while working on a project.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think it is very well structure because I feel the balance between the time I spend at university work and my company is good.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The support is good. My manager and colleagues always make it clear that if I ever need support, I shouldn't hesitate tell them. Also, I have regular meetings with my manager and my tutor at JLR which is very helpful.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I get good support as the content covered in university is always given to us in a clear manner, and is easy to find when we want to revise. Also, the 1-on-1 support is very good as we can message the professors, and I have regular meetings with my tutor at university who is always very helpful.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Very well as I can already start to see lessons I have been taught by the university being implemented and used in my workplace. A good example of this was learning about the 4V's in business and KPI's.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

JLR make a great effort at putting on extra-curricular activities and make it feel more of the university life. For example, I have been involved in doing escape rooms, football tournaments, and playing tennis.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Because they have a great deal of experience managing apprentices, which is shown by the support and understanding they give with managing company work and university work.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?

Grades are not enough to get you a place at JLR, you must show an interest for the role you are applying for. A good way to do this is to gain work experience in the field you are applying for.
Make sure to also research the application process, and try to prepare as best you can for each stage by learning more about it.
