Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My Apprenticeship involved moving around the BAE systems Air sector and experiencing different areas of the business in order to develop my skills as a well rounded aerospace engineer. I typically spend my day shadowing experienced members of the business and completing my own individual apprentice tasks as well as apprenticeship standard work such as write ups and knowledge questions
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my apprenticeship. The work is very engaging and it feels like I am being paid to do my hobby. The days go very quickly. The degree side of things help to develop my knowledge of things within work by learn9ing the theory behind it all.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes:
- Fabrication - designing and manufacturing my own custom components for jobs
- interpersonal skills - talking and communicating to other colleagues
- working under pressure / to deadlines - ensuring I complete my work in good time.
- developing my professional knowledge of engineering - being able to have a better understanding of engineering processes and concepts within the aerospace sector

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
There has been a bit of disorganisation at times throughout my apprenticeship so far, in terms of organising our placements. It can sometimes take a long time to get answers from people as well.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
There is plenty of support on offer throughout the whole company. They always remind us to reach out at any time if we find ourselves struggling with anything.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Some support is available from our training provider, however feedback from assignments has been a big issue. We have to wait long amounts of time for very generalised feedback (i.e. not tailored to each individual)
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel that the theoretical knowledge that I have gained through my training provider has helped me understand my work better within my apprenticeship. I am able to perform more tasks using this knowledge to assist me further ( performing calculations or interpretating data)
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, I have become a STEM ambassador through BAE systems to assist and support with visits to educational facilities such as schools, colleges and other STEM events.

The people that you work with are very welcoming and supportive towards new apprentices and are committed to helping you progress through your apprenticeship. The benefits of working within BAE systems are also very good. good pay, and lots of support for anything you may be struggling with in or outside of work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
during your interviews, you should just be yourself, whilst also showing your passion for the industry. They want people with interest and good communication skills. make sure that you also understand the key contracts of the business as well. Finally, make sure you understand the type of apprenticeship that you are applying for, and that it is the right type of engineering that what you want to do.
