Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is to provide strategic leadership to the education department of an NHS Trust. This includes managing internal and external stakeholder expectations, supporting relationships with local HEIs, ensuring educational services meet operational and workforce needs and helping set cultural direction.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme has been hard at times, juggling work, educational and family life is always tricky, but the rewards are worth it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Throughout my apprenticeship I have focused on developing confidence in managing discussions across a spectrum of stakeholders, from high level strategic conversations with board and executive level colleagues and system partners to operational staffing and resourcing discussions.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme has been well organised and structured. The learning from each module informs the next making the progression of the programme logical and clear to understand. Occupationally, learning occurs when opportunity arises making it less predictable but equally as valuable.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have been given full support by my employer. My mentor attends all reviews, offers frequent opportunities for development and actively looks to encourage me to engage with developmental activities. i have been given full support in terms of my off the job allocation.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My Quality Coach and Dissertation Supervisor have both been really supportive. Academic support has been available throughout when required.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My performance has been improved immeasurably by my learning and acquisition of new skills.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I have had the opportunity to engage in numerous extra curricular activities including stakeholder networking events, apprenticeship ambassador network events, recruitment and social engagement events.

Why?

The support I have had throughout this programme, and my wider career, has been invaluable in my personal and professional development. I have been able to plot my own path through the organisation and am proof of the clinical careers framework in action. A culture of investment in people exists.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to North East Ambulance Service?

Careers exists throughout the organisation, not just in clinical roles, so whatever your aspiration there is something that suits. Consider your personal development, demonstrating integrity, honesty, resilience, team working and a passion for supporting your community.
