Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work with management and delivery team on the statutory health, safety and environmental requirements as per the Councils operations. I assist the management team in ensuring that the legal and Council SHE requirements are implemented. I assist in developing, reviewing and checking on the implementation of safe systems of work, deliver training (e.g. toolbox talks & inductions), investigate incidents, analyse data and present findings to the management team. I engage with all aspects of the organisation to support the embedment of a culture and comply with equality and diversity standards. I aim to inspire and influencing others to see the benefit of working responsibly, understanding the legal framework and showing how safety, health and environmental management can enhance operational activities. My day to day activities and responsibilities are spread across Occupational Health, Wellbeing and Safety, so one day I can be responsible for undertaking Health Surveillance - medicals/health checks, the next I could be assisting in a health and safety review for a client, such as school; I also work with my team in the business administration, taking responsibility for replying to health, safety and wellbeing queries in the inbox, compiling reports, answering calls to both internal and external colleagues.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am thoroughly enjoying my apprenticeship; its varied, challenging, rewarding and I have the privilege of working with the most remarkable colleagues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I've learnt many new skills such as training to become a Health Surveillance Technician, which included three months of daily in-house training on blood pressure, audio tests, spiro tests, an audiometry course and exam, a spirometry course and exam, and a NEBOSH General Certificate which was two weeks of training with a tutor and two written exams. This learning has developed my skills and abilities further and I continue in my self-development to improve skills all of which are available free through the Council's Learning Hub, and of course, last but not least, I'm learning daily from my exceptional colleagues.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My apprenticeship was well thought out and structured from the outset with a flexible approach to adapt to mine, the organisations and team requirements.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I am totally supported by my line manager, team members and colleagues who I collaborate with. I have a weekly 121 with my line manager who gives me the time and space to raise any concerns. ask questions or go over any issues; and they are also available to contact throughout the week. My team members are incredibly supportive, sharing ideas and techniques to enhance our service.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
My training provider is very supportive; I have weekly allocated time with a tutor, who is highly skilled and knowledgeable in my apprenticeship area, to discuss assignments, project work, check on my health, safety and wellbeing. There is flexibility and help if needed at other times.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification has given me specialised knowledge and skills to effectively manage and implement SHE requirements. I inspire and influence others in best practise of HS and Wellbeing. I've had the courage to assist in training sessions, and work on several projects with colleagues, allowing me to perform better.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, many and varied from Yoga, walking, knitting, menopause group as well as speaker events, equality and diversity forums etc. They are all inclusive and helpful.
