Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a Service Asset Analyst I look after the software used by the authority, including licences, subscriptions, contracts and purchases. I ensure that we use it in a compliant manner and we're providing the best value for the taxpayer.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The programme fits very well with my day-to-day job. There is a lot of flexibility in the way I approach my studies, bar the 2 weeks at the campus that are fixed and scheduled in advance.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, the apprenticeship has solidified some of my existing knowledge and also built on some additional skills that I find useful in my day-to-day role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The programme is a little slow paced which is understandable as everyone learns things at their own pace. In addition, a lot of my peers were new in their jobs which added some extra challenge so considering the bigger picture, I don't see the slower pace as a bad thing.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Cornwall Council is an extremely supportive employer. You will be supported by a dedicated apprenticeship team who are outstanding and passionate about their roles. In addition my line manager was really supportive of my apprenticeship and they allow me to prioritise my coursework and exams. They also provide day-to-day support through employer evaluations.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Part of our induction week focused purely on all support routes, teams and tools available to us and there is plenty available. Starting from my academic mentor who is dedicated to helping us out and provides us with regular information on the things that matter to us. There is also a dedicated Apprenticeship Support team, and while I didn't have to interact with them yet, I'm sure they would be able to help me with my query if I ever needed to contact them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It certainly improved a lot of my existing skills. I was lucky to be in my role for some time and some of the tools and techniques I learned turned me into a more effective employee.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
My workplace offers a lot in terms of extra activities. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of social events which can be organised by the individual teams or a wider service. There are also plenty of employee forums dedicated to its causes.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cornwall Council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is extremely satisfying to make a difference for the residents, business and visitors to Cornwall. We are at the fore-front of improving the County and making people's lives better through all the public services we offer (and there is loads). While my salary is lower than what I would earn abroad, or even in the private sector, other benefits available to me easily compensate for that, e.g. flexi and remote work, a fantastic pension, salary sacrifice car scheme and generous pay increases every year. Lastly, you will work with a lot of dedicated and passionate industry experts. Cornwall has a much smaller industry than other areas in the UK so the Council sees a lot more talented and dedicated people than other public sector employer in the country, at least from my experience.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cornwall Council?
Regardless of the job you're applying for, your interviewers will be there to help you, not to test you. You may also find it beneficial to learn about STAR interview techniques that are frequently used by the authority.
