Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

1. To support Site Leadership to identify and deploy environmental projects supporting Eaton 2030 sustainability goals.
2. To Lead Continuous Improvement (CI) deployment and execution CI tools- Value stream mapping, Visual control management, Leader standard work, 5S, Kaizen events & RIEs etc.
3. To ensure correct allocation of Capex to Eaton health and safety, Productivity, Growth or Infrastructure projects. Timely execution of the projects on quarterly basis.
4. To raise CARs( Capital Appropriation Requests) for all Capex projects in the plant.
5. Drive CI Events, trainings, Gemba walk and SIO walk around the whole plant (both office area and shop floor)
6. To reach Demonstrating and facilitating 5S across site to support Safety.
7. Working on several cost-out projects like Scrap reductions, set up time reduction, standardization of site communication.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, indeed!
I have started from zero knowledge on Operations Excellence and Continuous Improvement. I have started with getting trained on CI tools, assisting or shadowing my manager in different projects, getting used to the company culture etc. Later on as I could understand the business and the signification of operations excellence in a business , I took on few cost-out projects. Through trials and errors, I have successfully finished my internship. The growth within the role was slow but steady.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt all the CI tools and Lean management techniques to optimise any operation of a manufacturing business.
I have had great growth in this role in terms of team building, public speaking, problem solving and networking with people.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I got support from not only my team, but also the whole leadership team in Sutton. The leaders are approachable and they constantly try to encourage by putting you through challenging situations. That made me overcome a lot of fear, made me used to the tough situations and in the end instilled confidence in me.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Eaton is a multinational conglomerate functioning in various sector. My experience in Electrical sector of the company has been really enlightening. The company culture is really transparent and inclusive. Being the only Asian in my office, I have never come across a situation where I am ruled out. The whole team has been always supportive and caring towards me.
