Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Civil Engineering Apprentice within an Infrastructure team partaking in drainage, highways and utilities work using autoCAD and Civil3D on a variety of projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the programme a lot, with the split between studying and working being a good balance for me. I also think it is a good way to enter the workplace and be able to develop at a comfortable pace.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I had never used autoCAD or any similar software prior to the apprenticeship which is something I used everyday and am now quite proficient at using. I have also been introduced to ProjectWise and SharePoint, both key sites for storing drawings and models at Motts.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme is very well structured with a set day for university (Mondays) with an established university (London South Bank) with many full time students as well as apprentices. It allows for university to include societies and events!
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive good support from my employer with my line manager being very aware of any time off I have whether that be study days, training/CSR days or annual leave. We also have quarterly meetings in which we set/discuss goals to achieve throughout the year.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
We receive one day of university lectures per week during term time however, lecturers will often answer emails with any questions out of these times as well as provide recourses to help during revision seasons.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I believe currently the information being studied is not directly related to my work however, as the modules become more specific (as the course progresses) I believe it well be more directly influential.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are networks online such as the woman's network as well as there being sports teams and events such as the netball team or the company sports day. There are also socials held every so often whether that be team/office socials such as at Christmas or ECP socials.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a big company which allows for many opportunities with a variety of projects and types of work to try. It also has a friendly atmosphere and going into the office is enjoyable. Despite this the flexibility of hybrid working is wonderful and allows for productivity even on days where emergencies occur and getting to the office is not feasible.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
Prepare for the interviews by understanding the company's ethics as well as some key projects which attracted you to apply there. Also ask questions as it shows engaging (you don't have to know everything when you start)!
