Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Working as a local reporter, I gathered and produced my own stories for multiple platforms with a focus on Radio and Online articles.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have really enjoyed a good proportion of my programme. I can be quite busy in my local department and placement but generally the work side of things I find incredibly enjoyable. The opportunities I have had with my apprenticeship have genuinely been outstanding and excellent!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned both academic skills (broadcasting regulation, media law), and practical skills such as how to create an effective TV and radio package. Overall, because I am learning on the job these skills have been directly applicable to my role in Guernsey.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
I think more can be done to improve this. I know specifically on group trips there have been lots of issues with last minute changes in plans e.g multiple schedules going around, making it easy for apprentices to lose track of expectations.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I think more can be done by my academic provider and my manager to accomodate my disability, but generally the support I have recieved from my employer has been positive.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
This has been an ongoing challenge for me, as sometimes it can be difficult to identify who is the correct person to reach or contact. Also, due to the nature of the staff and their fulltime roles, sometimes they are not available to support due to other commitments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It has been absolutely essential. I would not be able to carry out my role without the qualification I have recieved.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Yes, but because I am based in Guernsey, there is limited opportunity for me to engage with these.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have learned so much both about the world of media, and myself as a professional. It has been lifechanging and given me a great number of professional opportunities, and for that I am extremely greatful. Furthermore, I have recommended the programme to a number of students in my network.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
Authenticity is essential - don't try to be someone you aren't. If you are a good fit, the role will likely be easier to get than you think.
