Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I support individuals with sight loss by providing mobility training, daily living skills, assistive technology guidance, emotional support, and advocacy. We assess needs, develop rehabilitation plans, deliver training, and promote independence, working with professionals, families, and communities to improve quality of life.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am well supported by my apprenticeship team, team mentor, sensory support team, tutors on the course, fellow students and management. The programme is relevant and is setting me up with great foundations to enjoy a long career.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed academic skills, including research and Harvard referencing, while expanding knowledge in visual impairment and deafblindness which has helped my report writing. I create presentations and support clients across Norfolk which has strengthened my training, advocacy, and emotional support skills.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well organised and structured.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

As well as financial support (expenses, mileage, hotel) I receive regular progress meetings, apprenticeship reviews, study days, opportunities for shadowing (both ways) and 1-1s throughout my apprenticeship so far.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I am able to email tutors, 1-1s in person at group learning weeks, and on the spot support. Each tutor is very knowledgeable on their subject.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Without the training I would not be able to perform my role. It helps me be a better colleague to internal and external professionals and give the best service and outcomes to the people of Norfolk.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Not that I am aware of but as we work so hard during the day, we all have our own busy fulfilling social lives that we do not need this. We make sure we have a team meeting every month which includes business and social.

Why?
I have worked for Norfolk County Council for 4 years in 2 roles. Each role I have been well supported, if you work hard this is flexibility. There is the chance to really make a difference to peoples lives here in Norfolk.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Norfolk County Council?
There can be many changes to infrastructure within Norfolk County Council but this can only benefit you in being able to understand the council as a whole and how it works with changing demands. There are opportunities and some very wonderful passionate people here.
