Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
On a daily basis I will reply to emails and teams messages and maybe have a few calls or meetings. I am responsible for the creation and updates to 2D or 3D models and sometimes the checking of others work.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy my programme. The work, University and personal life balance can sometimes be a struggle, especially towards exam periods but this is not always the case and my team are eager to help me out wherever possible.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed existing skills I had from school and previous part time jobs. I used to coach sports to kids so I have always been good at communicating and explaining things to beginners which has developed and allowed me to have good communication skills.
I also had good IT skills that I have developed on.
I had a little bit of experience using CAD design software's from school that I have greatly expanded and improved upon as it is part of my day to day activities.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I would say it is well organised. We are allocated one day a week for our university attendance and then we also receive a study day for each exam we have as well. This allows us to attend our lectures and use these study days to better prepare for exams.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
We have our allocated university days which help with our progress. My team are all great at making themselves available for advice. Often they will send me examples of things they have or are working on that may be relevant to my progress or current classes. They are also keen to explain anything I am struggling with if I ask for their advice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Our lecturers are there for our classes every week. The deliver most of course content in a very open style. They will run through slides but are happy to take questions at any time. They also do a lot of worked examples with us that allows us to see the process of calculations in full with explanations. They are readily available over email and are happy to set up meetings to discuss any further issues or questions we have.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
There is a lot of knowledge that I am learning that increases my general understanding of civil engineering as a whole. Even if I am not currently working on anything that directly applies to what we are studying at the time, I still receive more context and understanding of certain materials or design methods which I will use more as I progress towards design work further down the line.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Yes, there are a large amount of networking, sports and social events organised by the company on a regular basis. Individual teams also organise activities amongst themselves frequently.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall I feel it is a great place to work. I feel I have flexibility within my work and that my team are also very focused on giving me the exposure to appropriate work to boost my experience.
However, I do feel the pay could be better. I am aware I am in a very fortunate position to be being paid whilst working towards my degree but almost everyone on my course is earning significantly more than me, most of whom have been working at their companies for much less time and have less experience and responsibilities than me.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
I would advise doing your research before applying/ interviewing. It is a great company but positions can be very competitive. Anything you can do to show your interest in the company would likely benefit you, for example asking questions and showing interest about projects the company has been or is involved with. Or also expressing areas/ sectors you have have an interest in for example water, structures, energy etc.
