Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a first year electrical manufacturing apprentice at Cavendish Nuclear. Within my role as an electrical manufacturer, I am required to perform a variety of repair jobs, re-wiring, and re-soldering activities. As well as also being required to perform brand new assemblies on PCB boards and other loom and wiring activities. Other areas of my job will include using test equipment to identify faults with certain components, as well as ensuring that new working being provided is safe and performing correctly and as it should do.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
So far on my apprenticeship with Cavendish Nuclear, I have enjoyed being able to work with and meet a wide range of highly experienced technicians and professionals within the Nuclear Engineering industry, as well as being provided with invaluable experiences to attend site visits and residential trips.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Throughout the completing of my apprenticeship with Cavendish Nuclear, I have been provided with opportunities that have allowed me to work on and improve my soft skills, such as communication, confidence, time management, and organisational skills. I have also been provided with the opportunity to take responsibility and ownership over areas for improvement and problem solving - developing innovative ideas and delivering the improvements within the workplace. Furthermore, completing my apprenticeship with Cavendish Nuclear has massively increased my knowledge around mechanical and electrical equipment and processes used, as well as my practical skills and ability - using a wide range of tools, equipment and machinery. For example, soldering irons, lathe machine, milling machines, and pillar drills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The apprenticeship programme at Cavendish Nuclear does have some structure in the form of an enrolment process, followed by a review process. There was a template to follow throughout the opening few weeks of my apprenticeship - providing me with mandatory online training and induction activities I was required to complete. However, I do believe that a key area for improvement could be to create a clearer apprenticeship schedule - showcasing the objectives you have set with you line manager, the tasks and projects you will be working on, as well as where you are expected to be in terms of practical skills and ability at certain stages of the apprenticeship. Therefore, this would help to identify what I need to be focusing on, and the events and activities that will be taking place in the future.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
At Cavendish Nuclear I do receive support from my employer - through regular meetings and catch ups with my supervisor. However, sometimes it can be difficult to arrange meetings with my line manager to discuss aims and objectives throughout my apprenticeship, as well as my development throughout the apprenticeship or topics and questions I have for them. Although, I do understand that my line manager is very busy and has a lot of technicians to oversea and supervise within the department where I am located at work.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
At the beginning of my apprenticeship and when I first attended Loughborough College, I did not feel as if I was being provided with clear explanations and support with what was expected of me and the work I was being asked to complete. However, after the first 1-2 months of attending Loughborough College, I do believe that I am now receiving much clearer and useful support - that is helping and allowing me to work towards completing a wide range of assignments and activities as I work towards achieving my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
There has been some confusion regarding how specific/relevant the qualification I will be receiving in addition to the course I am completing - is to my job role. However, the college course that I am completing will help to provide me with a much broader knowledge of health and safety, business improvements, engineering materials and forming processes, as well as knowledge and skills of how to use a wide range of engineering tools, equipment, and machinery - which will help to enhance my perform within my job role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
At Cavendish Nuclear there are opportunities to participate in 6-aside football matches and tournaments, as well as attending networking events and performing STEM activities and BE KIND days within the local community. Additionally, everyone at Cavendish Nuclear are open to any events or charitable ideas that you have in mind - and will try to help you develop and deliver the ideas you have proposed.
