Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work on different Babcock sites with communication systems. These include satellite communications, computer networks, radio links, fibreoptics.
I spend one out of every six weeks doing a college training module.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Very much enjoying it. Babcock's training staff are very professional and extremely knowledgeable. There are many available resources to help me through my apprenticeship. We are present in a large amount of new and exciting innovation projects too. Babcock offer lots of flexibility and they are keen to listen to my opinions and plans.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Lots of new skills - all relating to my job role.
- Install or support installation of equipment and termination of cabling
- Identify the causes of issues relating to frequency re-use and other noise sources
- Configure and maintain Internet Protocol (IP) based Radio Frequency (RF) telecommunications network
- Gather network performance information and user insight through feedback or user experience
- Use equipment and technology responsibly and effectively
- Keep up to date with developments in technologies, trends and innovation using a range of sources

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Our staff and IT systems are well-organised allowing me to easily and efficiently arrange my time. Babcock are quick to process queries and are great at maintaining an open, and communal network of staff.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Lots of support is available. Babcock are great at arranging training courses, sourcing guidance, and keeping me in the loop with what's going on. Staff are easy to communicate via both digital and face-to-face methods. We have many systems in place which ensure that employees are comfortable in their day-to-day roles and can progress through the company as they please.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Plenty of support. My training provider regularly monitors my progress and no question is left unanswered. I can communicate with them at any time and they are open and willing to discuss the most efficient route to achieving my qualifications.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Babcock have been very thoughtful in choosing both my role and my training so they complement each other. This really enhances the learning experience as I study a particular subject which I can then see in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes - we have an early careers team who organise events and provide apprentices with great opportunities to socialise and network.

Why?
I can't fault Babcock. They have employed me as an apprentice and provided me with everything I need to begin a fantastic career with them. The opportunities are exciting, the training is thorough, and there is never a dull day. Expect a large workload but one that will shape you into a fantastic engineer with a fulfilling and interesting career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?
Babcock are a modern and moral company with an eye for talent and dedication. It's an efficient recruitment process and you will be kept up to date throughout. The best advice I can give is to be enthusiastic and dedicated to your craft, and show the recruiters that you can offer them something back on the huge investment that they put into their employees.
