Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role as an electrical designer right now consists of a lot of training in software's and company standards/guidelines, occasionally I would be tasked with aiding someone in my team with a piece of work, most of the work I do as an electrical designer revolves around having proficient usage of CAD software such as inventor so my assistance would be requested. The apprentices has an in-detail plan from our early careers to ensure we get the most out of our apprentices so occasionally we are given tasks from them to complete.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have been thoroughly enjoying my time on the apprentice, I am only around 7 months into my program but feel I have learned a lot and feel not only welcomed but encouraged to push myself to get the most out of the program to become a real asset to the business of Cavendish. I feel the work that gets given to me is extremely engaging and a good source of experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned a wide variety of skills, not only skills I need to be proficient in my role as an electrical designer but a lot of transferable skills as well. Skills I have learned for work consist of CAD mastery and recently, due to being on a placement, I have started to gained workshop skills such as soldering and wiring arrangement. Transferable skills I have learned are professional communication skills, this is either face-to-face with a colleague or even constructing a high level email with appropriate content and grammar.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I feel that my programme overall is very well structured, and where I feel it lacks slightly is made up by an early careers team that wants to improve and aid their apprentices and early careers. Where my programme lacks structure specially is not having clear cut documents on what will be expected of you on your placements during your time (an itinerary if you will)
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a large amount of support from my employer, most of the time the response time is impeccable, early careers main gaol is to make sure that we are all comfortable and happy with the way things are, whether that's in work or within our training providers. They make sure to have at least bi-monthly catch ups with all the apprentices where we can raise any potential issues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I feel we get a significant level of support from our training providers, however most of the time I feel they neglect us slightly and sometimes I feel the way the teaching is portrayed could be slightly improved. For example linking the work in lesson to our assignment work would be beneficial.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I feel currently that the subjects that cavendish have selected for us to undergo do have a direction link to our work, I am on a few electrical courses coming up and feel that having abetter understanding of electronics is going to very useful when it comes to carrying out design work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Cavendish Nuclear make sure to provide some opportunities for apprentices to have site visits, recently the company paid for a handful of apprentices to visit the Nuclear site being built (Hinckley point C) and I feel it was a great experience for us to fully grasps what it is we are working towards.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cavendish Nuclear to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I feel Cavendish really wants to plan for a successful future, and they make sure that the future workforce (apprentices) are well taken care of and pushed to do their best. We are given countless opportunism to better ourselves, whether that's via special events or raining courses to make sure we are well supported for our future prospects and job role.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cavendish Nuclear?
Make sure to research the company and actually understand why they do the things they are doing and how beneficial it is for our country. Come in with an open mind and never say no to the exciting opportunities the company provide for its employees to take part in. And probably the most important tip i can give is to come in with a questioning attitude, this is by far the most important characteristic to have in the nuclear industry.
