Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an apprentice, you rotate placements every 4-6 months so your day-to-day tasks will vary. Generally you will be tasked with creating and/or editing technical documents, interfacing with external partners/customers and performing tests/analysing data (depending on the placement). You will also attend college once a week where you attend lectures and complete assignments to achieve an HNC.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have really enjoyed my time so far as an apprentice. Everyone is willing to help you with anything you are struggling with. I have also made some close friends on my scheme and have enjoyed seeing them on further education days.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt and developed many different skills during my time. These include but are not limited to: IT skills, report writing, interpersonal communication, problem solving and mathematics.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is fairly well organised but could improve in some areas. The early careers staff have always been very friendly and helpful. However, the placement allocation process seems to be a bit all over the place, but I do recognise that this is an issue from higher up and not fault of the early careers staff.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive and am eligible for all kinds of different support, whether it be professional or personal. I struggled with my mental health in my second year and the support I received was invaluable. I do not fully take advantage of the support available but it is all there and definitely worth using.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Juggling placement work with qualification work can be difficult and stressful. My skills coach, who is in charge of coordinating qualification work, always helps me whenever I am stuck. They will guide you on what to include in your work and are there for any questions you have, regardless of the subject.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
To be completely honest, it hasn't helped me much as of yet. The most helpful aspect has been the development of my writing and language skills as you employ these on a day to day basis, whether it be writing emails or editing documents. It helps the other way round in the sense that your placement work will help you produce qualification evidence easier.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I have seen a few posters in common areas for 5-a-side football leagues and book clubs but never gotten involved. I am sure there are more activities available, I am just not aware of them. However, with there being on-site facilities available it makes planning activities with colleagues much easier and you are able to set up clubs/teams if you get enough backing.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It's a welcoming work environment and easy to get along with colleagues, you can work in many different roles and locations whilst staying in the company, you are well paid and the technology you are working on/with are second to none from an engineering perspective.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Learn about the products the company makes, learn about who they interact with and read up on the core behaviours. Most importantly if you are not successful at getting a place the first time, try again as soon as possible.
