Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role in Engineering involves projects, maintenance, and repairs. I carry out repair of products which have failed on the production line that are too complex or take too much time for operators to repair, and carry out the maintenance of all production equipment, from torque drivers to test sets.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoy the programme as it allows me to view a wide range of subjects and topics within my role, and get lots of hands-on experience in the workplace while also getting a higher qualification. In addition, it has taught me skills that translate to my out-of-office life.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned new skills around organisation of monthly and daily tasks, as well as furthered my knowledge in problem solving techniques. In addition, this role has allowed me to develop mechanical and electrical skills such as coding and hand fitting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is well structured to allow Apprentices to view every aspect of their job instead of focussing on only one task within the role. I have been able to shadow multiple Engineers across all types to help me get a feel for the various jobs, from projects to maintenance Engineering.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I am well supported by all members of my department and leadership team (notably my manager). If there are any concerns or questions, we are encouraged to ask them to gain clarification no matter how menial it may seem.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I found that the in-person support from our training provider was useful as they could help clarify any queries, however remote support was lacking as we rarely got email replies so had to wait until our college day for support (although it was adequate).

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think the qualification has allowed me to view my job role in a clearer perspective and made me perform better in the role. The training covered all aspects of Engineering (maintenance, projects, electrical in particular) which has helped me to progress much more efficiently and made a better Engineer.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Within our workplace is a collection of annual wellbeing events to help boost morale and strengthen team skills within the company. These events include sports events (previously rounder), quizzes, and annual walks in different areas of the UK.
