Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
As a naval architect/construction engineer, I will eventually be working in commissioning department, doing various engineering jobs. Currently we are in placements, completing various tasks with experienced workers, learning basics and also more advanced things. Alongside this we are attending college once a week, learning lots of different engineering applications, such as CAD or Fluid Mechanics.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Overall I have really enjoyed the apprenticeship. Working on site has been a new experience for me, and I have found it very interesting and the people around me have also made it enjoyable. I also enjoy the fact that you're made to feel like the adult you are. Although you go to college, you're not treated like a child and the responsibilities given to you both there and on site helps you adjust into becoming a proper employee and making that transition from school to employment so much easier and more enjoyable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes. Before my apprenticeship I knew barely anything about physics and engineering, just the basics as well as some knowledge of design. Having been here for over a year now, my knowledge of engineering and the theory behind it has expanded significantly. I have also learnt how to use a lot of new tools, how to navigate around a ship and improved my ability to work within teams.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Babcock have been great, with a well structured period on site so far. The time spent with each placement has been the right amount to get the most out of them. Having the first year solely college based was also useful as I would have felt unconfident going straight into the yard with no knowledge, and it gave us a chance to get to know people (other apprentices) which I think is very important.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I feel we have received a lot of support from Babcock. Regular reviews with our ADAs and Assessors, as well as general talks with our front line managers have been very important as it helps us feel listened to and it shows that if you have any problems you have many options to turn to.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Mostly, City College Plymouth have been very supportive for us in reaching our qualifications. We did face some issues with assignments last year with college lecturers not setting the correct questions so we had to keep changing our work. However, they did rectify these issues and once this was sorted we were able to complete the work and get the grades we wanted. The pastoral care has also been great and we felt very supported through this, as well as regular presentations to teach us about life outside of work and other topics.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
Whilst it may not be currently useful due to our placements being tool based, in the future once higher apprentices are placed in their respective roles, it will become very useful. However some aspects of our learning, especially in engineering maths, science and materials has been useful in our current placements.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes. There are different social groups that organise to meet up, such as a health and safety group that meet up at lunches, i think there is also a neurodivergent group and an lgtb group and more. Alongside this, the group of higher apprentices that I am part of are very social, we go out a lot and i think this is quite common across the site.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Babcock International Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think it's such a great experience in terms of what you learn and the work you do is really interesting. You have a chance to meet some really great people, I've been here for less than 2 years and i've made friends for life. The actual job itself is so much better than your standard office job, you can turn up to work each day and be doing something completely different from the next. As mentioned, the support you receive is also great.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock International Group?
Even if you feel like you don't know a lot about engineering, that shouldn't put you off joining. I felt the same way beforehand but I'm so glad it didn't put me off as I have learnt so much in here and I now feel a lot more confident in my ability, and if you put the work in you'll be the same and after just your first year of college, let alone your entire four years.
