Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a software engineer apprentice so I spend a lot of time working on the different aspects of the software development lifecycle which includes requirements, design, implementation, testing and configuration. Most software teams have daily and weekly meetings to catch up on progress, which forms part of daily interactions.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I enjoy coding so as this takes up a lot of my day I find the program enjoyable in general. The university days are also usually quite decent although the assignments can get quite difficult to manage towards the end of the university academic year.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt a lot of new coding skills and have improved my ability massively in this regard since starting the apprenticeship. I have also gained a lot of new employability skills as this has been my first full time job.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme had already been running in approximately the same general format for many years when I joined so I have found it to be quite well organised and structured.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
There is a lot of support available from the skills coaches and other apprentice leads. The support received from others varies from placement to placement although generally the support I have had from managers and other team members has been good.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
There is a lot of support available from my training provider when working towards qualifications so I have no real complaints in this regard.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification does fill in the gaps that can form when working on many different types of software projects across placements, although many of the modules covered have not linked to my role that well (but they have provided good general background software knowledge).
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are many different opportunities that are available including several that are aimed entirely at apprentices. There is no shortage of things to get involved with in my opinion.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They have a wide range of apprenticeships available and it is a good place to begin your career with a strong focus on providing a good experience for apprentices. The company sees the apprentices as a key component part of its future due to high levels of retirement and aging.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Speak to people that work here already to see if it suits you and to gain valuable insights.
