Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Patterning and sewing up seat covers for hard models as well as soft foam seats, then applying these covers onto the surfaces and fixing into place with clips. Wrapping hard parts, trimming bucks with carpets or headliners. Experimenting with varied materials/thicknesses.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy having a job using practical skills that involves different tasks every day, and get to use a mixture of materials whilst getting to be creative and adventurous when trimming practice jobs. I also enjoy working with a team of all different ages and gaining their advice/experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Learnt how to pattern from experienced trimmers around me along with developing on previous sewing skills, but now being at a much more advanced level. Have been trained on several different pieces of machinery such as a laser machine and embroidery.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
There is a progress spreadsheet to track which jobs I have completed that my manager/mentor has been happy with the quality, along with the amount of times I have filled out these jobs and the date finished.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I have monthly 1:1 meetings with my manager to track my progress as well as talk through the jobs I have completed recently to see what areas I have enjoyed or where I can develop. Usually I am left to do jobs independently, however there are several peers around me to ask for help or advice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I discuss what I will need to display in order to pass my NVQ, and my manager joins in with meetings set up with my work based learning manager.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I enjoyed the college courses and workshops we completed such as milling, turning, sheetmetal and welding which could all be applied to manufacturing roles. However in terms of the design sector, there was not many courses or lessons that applied to a design role apart from technical drawings, but especially for a trim development role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are several sports groups and social events that are set up for anybody to join which are normally posted in a company wide email.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There are so many opportunities and different pathways an individual can go down which are equally interesting, and get to meet and work alongside a vast amount of people of a varied age group. Due to these differences in years of experiences there are many chances to learn and develop your own personal skills and in general progress.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
Show interest in the company direction and terms that they apply to themselves to provide a direction that your role can be situated in. Always keep an open mind and be respectful to other individuals as you can gain such good experience or general advice to help you develop and progress in your career, but also as an individual.
