Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work as an NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) engineer. I work with unreleased cars daily, with the responsibility of making changes to benefit the company financially or improving customer perception of our future products. I work with professionals who take me under their wing to become a well-rounded engineer.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
My programme is hard-work but it pays off. I have made a lot of connections at work and genuinely enjoy coming into the office to do my job. University is interesting and I am still able to feel like a 'University student' occasionally.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I have learnt so much at work. From communication skills to technical skills. I have worked on so many projects from JLR classics to the new Jaguar programme and have picked up on every bit of information along the way. i have learnt how to use several pieces of software to analyse and process data too.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I would say it is very well organised. However, this depends what department you end up in. I have the opportunity to go on 6-month placements every summer in areas chosen by myself. The university timetable can be a bit hectic at times but it is more than manageable.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
JLR is great at supporting young people. There is so many early career employees that there is a community within the company. From my direct manager to HR to the Early Careers team, there is a lot of support for us when we need it.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
University is good at supporting you when you reach out for a hand. They allow mitigating circumstances, however I would argue that it is harder to receive direct support at University in comparison to the workplace.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Some of the modules I carry out at university link directly to my job role. Some do not link at all but allow me to have an insight into different areas of engineering.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, there are many things to participate in. There are usual department activities, and on top of that thee are so many communities here at JLR that you can get involved with any group you like. Early Careers organise summer and winter balls, ski trips and many more too.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JLR to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There is so much opportunity here as a young engineer to learn whatever you desire. You never feel out of place or unsupported and always have a sense of pride on what you are working on.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JLR?
Firstly, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Degree apprenticeships are hard to get on to, have back ups in place. Secondly, harness any bit of engineering experience as you can. Whether this is taking apart electronics for fun or more appropriately organising work experience at similar companies. Thirdly, if you get through to an assessment centre, prepare rigoursly for interviews and research the company until you know everything there is to know!
