Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a Junior Software Developer, my role involves contributing to the development and maintenance of applications by writing, testing, and debugging code. My daily tasks include working on feature implementations, troubleshooting bugs, and collaborating with my team during stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews. I also engage in continuous learning by reviewing documentation, attending knowledge-sharing sessions, and refining my skills in Java, AWS, and CI/CD pipelines. Communication is key in my role, as I regularly interact with my Scrum Master and senior developers for guidance and feedback.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have found my apprenticeship to be a valuable and rewarding experience. It has given me hands-on exposure to real-world software development, allowing me to strengthen my technical skills and gain confidence in my abilities. The support from my team and the opportunity to work on meaningful projects have made the experience enjoyable. While there have been challenges, such as adapting to new technologies, they have ultimately contributed to my growth. Overall, I appreciate the learning journey and the opportunities it has provided.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, my apprenticeship has significantly improved my technical and soft skills. I have gained hands-on experience with Java and AWS, strengthened my problem-solving abilities, and learned to navigate GitLab effectively. I’ve also developed better debugging strategies, improved my ability to break down complex tasks into manageable pieces, and refined my communication skills when discussing technical concepts. Additionally, I’ve become more confident in troubleshooting issues and working collaboratively in an Agile environment.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme has a clear structure, with well-defined learning objectives and opportunities for hands-on experience. The combination of practical work and theoretical learning has been beneficial in reinforcing key concepts. However, there were moments where clearer guidance on certain expectations and timelines would have helped streamline the learning process. Despite this, the overall structure has been effective in supporting my development as a Junior Software Developer.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have received a good level of support from my employer throughout my apprenticeship. My team has been responsive and helpful, providing guidance when needed and ensuring that I have the resources to develop my skills. There have been times when I felt I needed more structured mentorship or clearer expectations, but I think that helped me to be more independent and foster a problem solving mindset. Overall I appreciate the encouragement and learning opportunities provided.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support from my training provider has been helpful in guiding me through the qualification process. They have provided useful learning materials, structured assessments, and regular check-ins to track progress. While the resources have been beneficial, at times, I felt that more tailored guidance or quicker responses to queries would have improved my experience. Overall, the support has been sufficient to help me complete my apprenticeship successfully.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification has provided a solid foundation in software development concepts, which has been beneficial in understanding best practices and improving my problem-solving skills. While the theoretical knowledge has been helpful, the real value has come from hands-on experience and working on real projects. The qualification has supported my learning, but I have found that practical application within my role has been the most impactful in my development.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities available at work. We have a monthly walk on the first Thursday of every month. Additionally, there are numerous tech expos, summer and winter parties, and various occasions to visit the head office for social events. These activities provide a good balance between work and networking, fostering a strong sense of community within the company.
