Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I assist my mentor with carrying out their daily tasks, such as doing drawing mark-ups, assessing sub-contractor applications, issuing instructions to subcontractors and so much more, as an apprentice you are definitely kept busy but always have a helping hand to show and guide you on your journey.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the opportunity to engage with people from all different backgrounds on a daily basis, also due to the nature of the industry, where I work is different from day to day and once a project is completed its off to the next one which could be anything from a school to building a hospital.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills, some of which include but are not limited to - use of Microsoft packages such as Excel, Word, Power-point, I have also learned how to use Revu Bluebeam. Another skill that I am developing is how to communicate effectively with others, be that colleagues, Subcontractors or clients.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I will say that when I joined the programme left something to be desired, however after feed back and an ever evolving process for assisting apprentices, the learning and on the job training has become far more structured. There are still areas for improvement however the company focuses on people first and will always work with you should you require assistance in a certain area, be that on the job or off the job. I have never once felt that my superiors were unapproachable when an issue arises.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
As stated in my previous response, I receive all support that i ask for where reasonable. The company truly strives to ensure that their work force are kept happy. The do this in so many ways that I would be writing a novel to write them down however the key points that I can give are - they actively encourage up-skilling delivered through training programs, online guides and events which can be attended, they also encourage team building activities to allow you to get to know your work colleagues in a non professional setting; this has helped massively as it allows you to see your superiors as more approachable should you have any issues.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
First and foremost we are employees, we have been hired to carry out a job and that has to be remembered, that being said, when submission dates approach for University work the company (at least in my experience) are very accommodating to make sure you have the time needed to submit your course work, should you require more time to ensure that you can submit your work to the deadline, the company would rather you take the time needed (within reason) than fail to submit on time.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I have been with the company for less than a year and currently at the beginning of my University journey so have very little input for this question.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
The list of extra-curricular activities are plenty full, at least in the area that I am working. Although I have not participated in many of them, I know that they are available and everyone is made to feel included should they wish to join in.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have worked for many employers over the years, some good, some that I will not mention, However when it comes to Kier, I can truly say that I have never worked for an employer who cares so much for their staffs development and well being, at this time I am actively trying to encourage friends and family to apply for positions at Kier as I know that they would be happy working here and go home at night feeling that they have made a difference.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
As cliche as it may sound, just be yourself, Kier wants people who can be themselves at work, I work with people from so many different ethnic, economic and social backgrounds but find each of them to great people to work with. The one thing that I would say is to have a genuine passion for the construction industry, this will help massively in enjoying the job that you will be doing.
