Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am an apprenitce Site Engineer and my job works closely with site engineers/supervisor and shadowing them as i am newly started too help learn the ropes. I am given responsibilities such as doing daily checks at the end of the day to ensure site is tidy and safe, helping to supervise the gangs working on site also making sure i put good number of observations on the app to ensure we learn as a project from this. Also doing daily BIM diaries to make sure we capture the works done on the day and any issues/delays.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
So far the the programme has been really good however as i said i am still very early on and have a long way to go. On site i am really fortunate to be surrounded by a team who are so willing to help me develop and in terms for the college side of things my first block was very challenging but also rewarding at the end of the block when seeing some of the things i had learned which at first i found so challenging

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I undertaken numerous courses like SMSTS, SEATs, first aid, which has played a massive part in Health and Safety which is most definitely the most important thing on any project so this has gave me confidence in being more independent around site due to knowing the correct safety procedures. Confidence/ Communication has also been extremely developed which is important due to the amount of people working on site communication is key due to the dangerous environment, I have been able to develop by taking myself out of my comfort zones like delivering toolbox talks, morning briefs, presentations which have helped massively.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Personally i do feel it could be structured a little better as not everything seems to be communicated back to us very well or explained when we don't really know what is going on, however there are some parts of the programme that is communicated well.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
During my time here so far everyone I have asked for help are always keen to help teach me things if i am ever unsure. I also enjoy the challenges set by my line manager which is brilliant for my growth as sometimes I am taken out my comfort zones it has not only helped in terms of a work ethos but on a personal level as well.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
I felt like the support wasn't great from lecturers, the lessons were taught off a PowerPoint and only that way which personally i found quite challenging as i struggle to learn that way for certain topics and when asking for support it was told in a very familiar PowerPoint way again
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
At this moment in time due to only completing two topics at college in my first block it is hard to say however it has helped me understand some of the calculation behind designing substations which obviously has an impact on performing better in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There is lots of activities to get involved in, there is football which occurs every Thursday but not only that a monthly get together happens where we all pick something which ranges from bowling, paintballing etc. where everyone from the team attends. Lots of us also go to the gym together which is really encouraging and helps stay fit.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Really great company to work for with numerous benefits and before joining, working away from home was explained thoroughly to me so I was not blindly thrown in but the benefits that come along with this is very encouraging and it has really helped me develop as a person and i would massively encourage this to anyone as it really does help personal development and key life skills.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
Make sure you thoroughly think and understand if working away from home suits you as i am fortunate to say it has been the best decision I've made but for some people it can be really hard so some thought does have to go into it
