Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role comprises of producing electrical building services designs for the buildings and cities division within Mott MacDonald. This comprises of communicating with the client to understand what they desire (for example lighting design, power requirements) and collaborating with architects, structural, civils and mechanical engineers daily to coordinate our designs. Once these designs are complete and approved, I attend site to oversee the electrical installation to ensure it is installed as per our designs and in accordance with regulations and standards.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am just concluding my programme and will sit my IEng ACIBSE end point assessment with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and I could not recommend the programme more. Getting paid to gain a university degree whilst learning on the job has been great, I believe by doing this route I am a few years ahead in my career as appose to if I went to university full time and joined Mott MacDonald as a graduate.
My colleagues have been very supportive and I could not recommend Mott MacDonald more as a company for apprentices to join either on the Advanced level or Degree level.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

- Learnt how to use industry software such as Revit, CAD, Dialux and Prodesign
- Developed presentation skills
- Developed maths and english through daily tasks
- Developed communication skills with a range of different audiences e.g. colleagues, clients, students at uni etc.
- Developed time management skills e.g. to meet project deadlines inline with design programmes.
- Engineering skills developed

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well structured. I attended London South Bank part time (one day a week) for 4.5 years and then 4 days working on projects at work. Mott MacDonald were very supportive allowing me to take 5 study leave days a year (which were paid) if the workload at uni got too much.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

As mentioned previous, my employer supported me from the start to the end of my apprenticeship. Study days were very useful throughout my degree for revision and coursework when the workload got tough.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Lots of help, for example before sitting my end point assessment I went through all the knowledge skills and behaviours I had to sign off to ensure I had enough evidence etc. In areas which I was lacking, for example management, my line manager would set me up with tasks where I could gain this experience.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Alot of my degree was theoretical background to calculations which in the industry is often carried out by software, for example heat transfer, lighting and cable calculations. However, knowing what equations and inputs into these softwares was very beneficial to understand as you always need to understand what you are designing!
My degree helped me with report writing and time management skills aswell as meeting like minded people who are undertaking the same programme as me but with different companies.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are lots of extra-curricular activities for employees to take part in, for example 5 a side football, hockey, an annual sports day hosted by one of the offices in the UK (this year is Cardiff), board game meetings, baking clubs, the list goes on!

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
- When applying for an apprenticeship remember you are not required to know anything technical within the industry you are applying for, you just need to be passionate and be willing to learn. So in interviews dont be afraid to say you don't know the answer to something.
