Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
6 monthly rotations around a variety of teams, with flexibility on which of these you decide to pursue. These can range from Environmental Impact Assessment, Air Quality, Climate and many more. Day-to-day responsibilities could include; desk-top surveys looking at certain conditions, research, site-visits, report writing and much more.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I have enjoyed the programme, however believe there should be greater focus on developing a depth of skills - i.e sitting in teams for longer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many skills, these range from; report writing, project management techniques (finances etc) and research skills. There is many opportunities to develop these throughout the programe.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
On the work side of things, there is opportunity to tailor and guide your career as you see fit which is a great benefit. In terms of university, they provide great support and guidance!
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
We receive all of our study days which is generous relative to the demands of university. Line managers are very supportive. If there was to be improvement, I believe certain teams could utilize apprentices more and trust us with greater responsibility.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Kingston University has been great at providing the curriculum, as well as ensuring we are compliant with other conditions; such as learning hours and knowledge, skills and behaviours.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Depends on which team you sit in, however would say it is limited in what we can apply from university to work. A general awareness to environmental science, does however, somewhat help in my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend WSP to a friend?
Yes
Why?
In terms of the programe and opportunities, yes I would. However, in terms of salary no I would not. Large consultancies, in London, pay their apprentices considerably more. Note - nationally the salary is fair but in London it is not.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to WSP?
Have an understanding of which areas of work/teams are of interest to you and actively read around these to develop an understanding of what is happening in industry. In addition, find a way to convey this through the application process.
