To provide insurance and risk management advice to clients, as well as working with the broking team and insurers to get the best deal possible for both client and insurer. As to manage our relations effectively.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have thoroughly enjoyed by time as an apprentice so far. As the world of insurance is so large and there will always be new stuff to learn. Which motivates me to better myself each day. Which is a key part to my enjoyment, as even though it has been 5 months, I have developed in my character and knowledge at such a fast rate.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt several new skills in whilst working at Marsh. Including the ability to build and maintain relationships, achieve desired business outcomes within my own area of insurance responsibility in line with Marsh’s commercial aims and objectives. As well as my ability to balance completing priority tasks in order to manage deadlines.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I would say the apprenticeship is organised well. In regards to how Marsh have presented the apprenticeship, it has been clear to understand what is expected of me in these 18 months. However the critique I would have more the apprenticeship is the Aptem learning + Off the Job hours that are required through the training provider Davies. This is because as an apprentice I am expected to find and submit (via aptem) 6 hours worth of new learning each week. Which can be difficult. But to put a positive note on this, I have forced myself to network with other departments within Marsh to learn about what they do in there job role.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The support from Marsh is incredible, but it starts from just my team alone. I am comfortable and able to ask anyone in my team for support, whether that is in regards to learning the insurance market/ help with my job role/ personal problems etc…
And moving more broadly, Marsh offer many great support options for apprentices. Whether that is learning days/ mentors / coaches etc..
Marsh also offer designated apprentice leaders and directors, that are always available to help us apprentices. And we have hold monthly catch up calls, to discuss any issues we may have with the apprenticeship.
I’d like to reiterate that I can find myself comfortable asking for support from anyone within the business.
And moving more broadly, Marsh offer many great support options for apprentices. Whether that is learning days/ mentors / coaches etc..

Davies offer plenty of support in help working towards my qualifications. The the aptem learning that is required to do, has taught me a lot about insurance, as well as a roadmap for the apprenticeship that clears up what the structure of the exams will be. Other support offered is a designated coach that provides feedback to on submitted aptem work/ provides progress reviews / catch up calls etc…
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Davies has allowed me to more efficiently develop my learning about insurance as a whole. With the various options for learning, whether that is: E-Learning, workbooks, case studies etc..
These forms of learning have allowed me to perform better in my job role, as I have a better understanding of the work that I am doing. And what impact I am having for Marsh and the insurance market.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Marsh offer several extra curricular activities that I have the opportunity to be a part of. Including social activities. My team have a monthly gathering to go out after work. In addition the department have there own version of this, where all teams have the option to have drinks at a designated area within the office.
Marsh also offer networking events. My department have setup a group called the Rising Professionals Network, where young colleagues in the department gather to talk about projects they work on and what their respective roles and responsibilities are.
This network has also provided social other networking engagement. As I got to have half a day of new learning about being a broker. As I shadowed a colleague in the broking team.

Why?
Marsh is the largest insurance broker in the world. And the standards within the company match the the reputation. I can’t even begin to comprehend the opportunities that are available to colleagues to develop their skills and allow them to fulfil their dreams.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marsh McLennan?
I would advise apprentices that apply to Marsh, to be prepared to have the world at your fingertips in terms of opportunity. As Marsh is a global corporation, you will have the chance to develop into a person you never thought was there. As an example, I am a very introverted person, but insurance is a people’s business where relationships are key to success. And this job has brought out confidence and ability with my social skills, that I did not think was there.
