Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
my main role is that of tool hire fitter. the primary remit of a fitter is to service the tools that are returned from the customer. servicing entails the following: cleaning the equipment, checking the equipment for damage, checking any serviceable parts such as air filters and finally checking the performance and safety of the equipment.
serving on the counter
delivering and collecting tools
my new role now includes working as the the reserve HGC HIAB driver
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
i enjoyed the freedom i was offered to make my own way through the program, once boundaries and expectations were defined.
in my case, due to the course being driving based, i was out shadowing my mentor in the truck, once per week.
this offered me the opportunity to develop my skills prior to learning to drive the HGV

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
the primary skill i have learnt is that i now have a HGV (class 2) licence.
in addition i have received HIAB training and am now able to carry out deliveries in the 26t for the branch when the primary drivers are off.
i have also achieved level 2 in english and maths

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
in short very well.
the course offered master classes that HGV drivers experience on a daily basis in several areas.
green band driving - fuel efficiency and emissions
securing your load - various methods of securing loads and load placement
tacho compliance - how to use a tacho and the legal requirements of breaks and rest periods
protecting the brand - the importance of being the last point of contact for customers
blind spot - describing the various and numerous blind spots that afflict HGVs and new technologies to assist
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
i cant fault the support i received from Travis Perkins.
firstly they freed me up from my normal duties once per week to be able to get out in the lorry with my mentor and to attend the masterclasses.
secondly they freed me up from my duties to attend the maths and English classes which i did at home. both courses were a week in length
finally they freed me from my normal duties to attend the exams and to learn to drive the lorry.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
couldn't fault Mantra
from the arranging of the masterclasses sending me the links to join virtually and then re sending when i accidentally deleted the email lol
arranging the maths and English classes. i was lucky enough to have a 1 on 1 maths class.
arranging the driving lessons and test
arranging the theory tests and MOD 4
to being there the day before my maths exam when i lost all confidence in doing a level 2
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
i am now able to drive the company HGV
before i could drive the HGV the branch would have to try and get in an agency driver in if one of the drivers phoned in unable to attend work.
now i can drive the HGV, the branch is able to complete customer orders as promised with little disruption and at a better cost
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
in short, no!
but...
we do have a Christmas meal and activity.
last year we went go-karting at a local track. unfortunately i did not place in the top 3 in any of our races but i'm guessing that's because i drive like i'm driving miss daisy.
i'm at a bit of a disadvantage as i live 26 miles away from work so do not often get involved with drinks out
