Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
We had presentations from speakers, in which their personal career journeys were brought to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] as well as their experience with Fidelity International. Beyond this, there were presentations on financial systems as a while. The programme was split over three days, breaking it down into equity investments, fixed income, and multi-asset funds. Each day we would have a challenge based on that day's teachings: one of the above noted finical systems. These challenges included teams of 6, an hour of research and a 5 min presentation.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
This was very interesting, to have an understanding of the overall finical systems was fantastic. It would have been good to have an outline of all the different sectors at the start, as this became slightly confusing as the sessions progressed. Overall, however, this was a good programme for gaining an overall understanding.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have not learnt any particularly new skills, as little was taught about how to go about researching or what to look for. Rather, teaching looked at the wider picture of things to help aid overall understandings. I certainly practiced skills of teamwork, analytical thinking and presenting during the challenges.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Mixed feelings on this. People seemed enthusiastic, but I stress a note on an enthusiasm as a banker. I don't mean this rudely, just enthusiasm seemed focused solely on the work and not beyond other passions which the company could champion, as such it could have been perceived as slightly dull. Furthermore, some of the most basic wellbeing or social aspects which could be implemented seemed to be taken as a stretch when suggested. For me, this is worrying as I would hope the company could offer a solid support system. This said, there are clearly some good systems I place: unlimited private therapy, call lines etc... All seem slightly hard approaches rather than soft, solving at a source.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I found this an honestly fantastic insight. I never considered this career as something I would actually enjoy. The characteristics of particular roles hold aspect of academia and action which I enjoy and have looked for in a job role. Furthermore, it has just opened a whole new world which has often seemed isolated to those with nepotistic access, as such it is clear there are elements of fidelity looking to improve their outreach and access.

Would you recommend Fidelity International to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Fidelity International
I can't really comment on this.
However, see below for some tips I received:
- The greatest indicator of a good employee is someone who is genuinely passionate about the job role. You need to prove this, for example by reading the FT or monthly reports by Fidelity or Bloomberg. It is key that you are up-to-date with current affairs, both economic and geopolitical, as well as the basics of some job-specific responsibilities.
- Recommendation: buy a stock (small amount) and follow it daily, then read around about the markets and try to understand what the news reflects in stocks and vice versa
