Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

The scheme involves 3-4 rotations across various areas of the business, and the team will accommodate preferences as much as possible. Throughout the programme there are exams and also coursework elements, as well as training in specialist software.
My current rotation involves writing research reports for current and potential holdings, creating presentation material for clients and other ad hoc tasks.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme has been enjoyable so far, particularly with respect to the work I have been able to get involved in and the support culture present at M&G.
The teams are generally very supportive and there isn't a strong presence of hierarchy like at other firms. On the other hand, I feel like sometimes (relatively infrequent) the fast-paced environment means that graduates can be left out.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I've learnt a great deal so far including new skills involving investment analysis and research, and have also had the opportunity to develop my existing skills such as time management, communication and relationship building and presentation skills.
The tasks that I complete are dictated by the demands of the business, so I have not always had the opportunity to develop specific skills where I feel I need to develop more.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is moderately well organised, with small bumps present at the beginning that have been swiftly ironed out.
Different teams are present in different locations within the UK which I feel can present an additional challenge for organisation and structure, it also means we have had the majority of our graduate/apprentice meetings in a virtual setting.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The talent team offer a significant of support, with a thorough onboarding process and initial training. As I have settled into the scheme contact with the talent team has reduced to allow for full commitment to to the rotations. I think this is the perfect balance between too little support and being overbearing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is a fair amount of support from the training provider, with lot's of content on the on-line hub and the trainers have been very skilled. There are regular meetings with the coach although I feel that these provide little value and I am frequently directed towards the trainers.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The IMC and CFA exams are very relevant and valuable to my development. There are coursework elements to the qualification as well, although these haven't been clearly presented and we are yet to start these - I suspect that they will be less relevant and direct time away from learning on-the-job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, frequent social activities although these are team dependent. M&G also have employee networks although in my limited experience in the firm, frequent side of desk work is not commonplace within the investment teams. I have also participated in many networking events at other employers but again this is team dependent.

Would you recommend M&G plc to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The apprentice wrapper provides opportunity for fast development in skillset - work life balance at the firm is good so the added exam and coursework elements don't feel like too much. The talent team are caring, and will listen and work hard to provide solutions in the case of any issues and they are easily contactable.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to M&G plc?
Know the business, and have an idea of preferences for rotations before you start as the team will try to accommodate. The team value authenticity - they do not expect perfection from the outset, so don't be afraid to highlight weaknesses and areas for development. Although the company is very flexible in their home working policy, as a new joiner it is important to work in the office as much as possible.
