Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves designing and creating designs to assist our client in upgrading their network. I work with Revit, AutoCAD, Microstation and other programmes to create 3D models and 2D drawings. I attend meetings with different members in the team and update the project leader on my progress and assigned tasks.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the programme a lot, it's refreshing from work and I can apply the knowledge that I learn in my day to day job. The programme is intense so it never gets boring. I met like minded individuals which I can leverage so I can be successful in the course.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I learnt about concrete mix design, steel reinforcement; sharpened up my mathematics. Learnt about Geology, materials, sustainability, drawing, cad, Revit, glass, plastic, steel concrete, carbon fibre, timber, masonry, bitumen, plastics, fluids, differentiation, integration, functions, statistics, tsunamis, water proofing, fire proofing, choice of materials, field trips, budgeting, ethical conduct and drafting

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well organised, it's intense and action packed. And I think the lectures are definitely beneficial. The only thing that I HATE, is the fact that I am going to be held up for 1 year after completing my course because I can no longer "Fast track" my EPA, so they are going to make me do an extra year to finish that, when I could perfectly do it over the summer and pass it and move on to the next apprenticeship.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer is extremely supportive. My manager hold regular catch up meetings with me to ensure that I am doing ok and that I don't work more than I should so that I don't hit my breaking point. They have also allowed me to take study leave which without it, I would've failed my exams for sure!
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

None at all to be honest. APTEM just feels like a "middle man" that tells me what I need to do and when to do it by. Aside from registering with them and being a database I don't know anyone at APTEM nor do I feel comfortable asking them for help.
As for the university, when it comes to professional qualifications.. To be honest, it just feels like they are my shadow checking over my shoulder that I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.
But I'm not surprised as I already hold the professional qualification for my course.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The fact that I am learning more about my field of work allows me to implement that knowledge in my work. As a BIM technician a lot of people see us as just people that draw lines and shapes for a living. However, if I know what I'm doing, I can feedback to the engineers any efficiencies that we can capitalize on to improve the work we deliver. I couldn't do that without this course.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

No. I work from home and my office is in Reading. To be honest, I don't like going to the office, I would rather work from my office at home, I feel like I get more work done. Besides, I'm at work to work and not to make friends. I have my own friends in my area and I play football 3x a week, workout, go out etc... with my friends, not work colleagues.

Why?
I have worked in the industry for about 6 years now and I have not yet found a company that looks after their own like Mott MacDonald, I have been ill, I've had deaths in the family and other personal issues and Mott MacDonald has helped and supported in everything! Which is a rare find in the industry.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
Bring your "A - game" no one that isn't up to the task will succeed at Mott MacDonald. We get well rewarded and looked after for a reason.
Don't give up - I was rejected once by Mott MacDonald, but I've always heard good things about the company, so I set my mind on getting a job at this company and they didn't disappoint! So even if you're rejected the first time around, don't let that put you off and go again!
