Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
i overlook and find solutions to projects that are given to our department which is asset engineering. we work with updating, improving and providing reliability to our assets and systems. this could be anything from reviewing the pumping systems to pipelines and sludge treatment processes within the wider company at thames
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
my day to day job is quite interesting i often will be completing very different projects so nothing is the same, every situation is an investigation into the systems and equipment there which keeps this engaging and interesting. it is fulfilling to create a project brief and solution and see this go forward to the appropriate people

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
i have improved my presentation skills as i am often given the opportunity to give talks to my department as well as others. i have a wide knowledge of pumps and pumping systems as well as the pipe types, what physics goes behind investigating flow and pressure, and the entire water and sewage treatment process

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
i have a day at university every week and am allowed to spend time during work to complete any work and training required. i am given the help and advice needed at every stage and the structure of my work is to advance my learning and achieve the best grade on my degree
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
i have multiple different people supporting me from the university, my organizational structure and from the internal apprenticeships team in Thames. i get regular meeting with all of these people to help resolve any issues i could have and they have been very helpful with providing me opportunities to further my development
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
my training provider has weekly lessons with projects that we are able to get feedback and help with throughout the week not just on our university day. they are very knowledgeable on their respective topics and provide insightful lessons that cover the entire topic as well as tasks that will help us with our work
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
my qualification gives me the background knowledge to my work subject and allows me to understand better the tasks needed for my role. my work and uni work hand in hand to further my knowledge and give me the experience to become a better engineer and to allow me to engage with my collegues
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
there are many groups within work for example the pride network that host events for you to attend. the apprenticehsips team also organise work events and social events to bring together people and allow us to network. our own personal team also holds events and conferences but these are not as often as i have seen other companies

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Thames Water to a friend?
Yes
Why?
it does depend on what work they would be looking for but thames water has so many different departments and roles to explore that you could find something for you. with the way the company is going it should be improving in the next 10 years so there is opportunity to join the team
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thames Water?
thames currently are trying to build up their workforce so make sure that you find and look for the correct role as well as look into if the water industry is for you. thames is commonly hybrid working and is rated one of the worst water companies in the country but it is on the rise hopefully.
