Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
After a welcome and overview of the firm from the Graduate Recruitment Team, the Training Principal talked through the training contract, the history of the firm and the opportunities available to trainees at Gibson Dunn. The day showcased the practice areas of the firm and the work Gibson Dunn does in international dispute resolution and international corporate transactions. This ended with an interactive commercial awareness workshop, including a group presentation, questions and feedback.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Hearing associates discuss their motivations for qualifying into either a contentious or transactional seat, in addition to different cases they had worked on, truly helped me to solidify the differences in not just the required skill set, but also in work content, between these two areas. The fact that Gibson Dunn can offer trainees experience in major deals on both sides to figure out exactly which is the right fit for each person is exciting.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
It was invaluable to hear the Training Principal's views on what differentiated the firm and the motivations of lawyers who qualified into litigious and transactional seats, as this helped me to better understand my own preferences. Additionally, the commercial awareness workshop gave me an enormous amount of knowledge which inspired me to take my curiosity for business further and to try new things in order to become a well-rounded commercial lawyer in the future.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
It was easy to feel the incredibly welcoming and friendly culture of the firm even through a screen. Unlike many other virtual open days I have attended, the firm took the additional time to speak to each participant and made direct interaction accessible. Even though the day is primarily for participants to figure out the firm, each person at Gibson Dunn made the effort to get to know you too and understand your career motivations.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
This was probably my favourite open day, despite being virtual. Usually, the long hours at a screen would make me feel tired or drained. However, Gibson Dunn never made it boring. The day included direct interaction with speakers, an abundance of question opportunities and a group activity which was both challenging and engaging. It truly was the small details and care the team put into the day that made it so refreshing and enjoyable.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP
I would recommend anyone who is interested in applying to Gibson Dunn to attend an open day with them. On the face of it, many elite international law firms look similar, but as soon as you attend this open day, you will instantly feel the difference between Gibson Dunn and its competitors. Don't be afraid to reach out to people for questions and network with as many trainees as you can!
