Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Assess risks to staff, customer and all those Pearson PLC has a duty of care towards across the APAC region. Undertake horizon scanning to ensure plans in place to mitigate foreseeable risks and physical infrastructure such as buildings and third party locations where Pearson delivers activity are legally compliant and provide a safe and secure environment to undertake business.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme is challenging but is has opened my eyes to new ways on doing things by understanding the academic models used to assess and manage risks across a global business. It has also provided a focus on the UN development goals and allowed my to implement a new way in looking at the diversity of our organisation to ensure we meet our UN SDG targets.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

During my programme I have been exposed to new responsibilities and developed new skills such as understanding and utilising soft skills to coach and advise staff members during times of stress such as during an incident response. I have also been utilising my new found leadership skills to influence an develop policies that have a global impact.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is structured well, modules are preceded with an introductory webinar to introduce the
topic and lecturer prior to face to face attendance along with all the relevant reading materials and access to library journals. Face to face sessions are useful and peer learning groups have been really useful for all participants.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer is totally supportive, I am allowed to study from home at least one day a week and attended at university for all face to face sessions as well as the time to attend the remote webinar sessions. My employer has attended all my skills sessions to ensure I have the support I need and ensured that I have access to senior leaders to discuss issues or access data or meetings to assist in my studies.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support from the training provider has been excellent, I suffered a personal loss during my programme as my father passed way but the support I received in ensuring that I had the extra time I needed to complete my assignments was fantastic and took the pressure off me at a time of high stress.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It's amazing the way the programme has now become part of my daily thinking, prior to commencing the training I never really reflected on my achievements and the goals I set myself and others therefore I struggled in articulating how much I had achieved. I now have a structure to map the achievement and goals and find I get more done in less time.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

The office has sports teams (Football etc) and hosts quiz nights face to face and online for those working remotely as well professional networking events for apprentices. We are corporate members of the association of apprentices which is now useful in uniting with peers and work and life skills development. We also have employee resource groups that allow staff to develop skills and knowledge via peer groups on social issues. The volunteer policy is useful for giving back to your community (I am a volunteer emergency responder)

Why?
As detailed above, Pearson are a supportive employer who believe in lifelong learning and provide the time, resources and support for staff to be able to achieve their learning objectives even if those objectives are not directly associated to their current roles but to another roles they aspire to in the future. The employer resource groups are a fantastic support and learning network as well as being able to volunteer and use the skills you learn at work for the benefit of your community.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pearson?
Apply for a role and use your skills, knowledge and behaviours to further enhance this great company. If you take the time to find what you are good at and what you enjoy and it fits with Pearson's digital ambitions then you will have a fulfilling career with great work life balance.
