Auditing financial statements and information. Includes Year end accounts as well as interim financial information/ assisting in preparation for the year end audit procedures. Will cover substantive testing/controls testing as well as general planning procedures such as walkthroughs and interim testing. Can cover writing memos and engagement management, request lists etc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

To a moderate extent. There are some good bits and then some terrible moments. It is possible that work can overload you and expectation of managing college and day to day responsibilities can create burnout. Clear communication required and need to be diligent in being selfish at certain times when required.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Enhanced excel skills and understanding of audit procedures. This is developed through working on audit procedures across all areas of the audit. Increased understanding of financial information and the industry factors and importance of precise management.
Developed my time management skills and coaching skills when providing assistance to junior team members and balancing work, study and social committments.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

I believe very poorly. The apprenticeship is too long and the exams could be done at a more appropriate pace. The refusal of the firm to sign off your training contact or qualification until 5 years is a business decision to retain you for longer.
Is out of line with graduates programme and to pay you less for longer.
Needs a rotational element to experience other experiences.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The training package with Kaplan is very good and comprehensive prep for the exams. However the time off in preparation for these is probably not sufficient to prepare properly and you utilise lots of your own social time, evenings & weekends. This is probably expected when starting but can feel tough.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Since COVID extra curricular activities have been limited and there has been increased focus on restricting budgets which has lead to the demise of many activities. The social environment has definitely got significantly worse since the beginning of my programme. Some teams are better than others but a bit on luck.

In the current environment I do not see any effort to resolve continuous problems. General feeling that the quality of people is changing and becoming harder to be efficient. Possibly driven by external factors and resourcing shortages but lacking drive and innovation.
However it has been a good place at times and with changes could be again.
