Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I was placed in the Streaming Platform team, which provides the infrastructure around Expedia's Kafka brokers. I was given a project to create an API that would allow data from any stream to be previewed.
Day to day, I'd plan the design for the ticket I'd be working on and start implementing. There was daily standup to attend and also regular meetings with my Manager and my Buddy.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes I had my own project and was expected to deliver that. However, help was available when needed and people were very quick to help.

As much as I wanted. I had weekly meetings with my manager, weekly meetings with my buddy and could ask people to zoom at any time if needed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Nobody seemed overworked or doing crazy hours. There was 1 incident where a Kafka topic was deleted and some team members had to do overtime, but that was apparently rare.
