Software Development Engineer Intern Review

My role as a Software Development Engineer Inter was to work on a project designed to solve a problem my team and its stakeholders were facing. In particular. I worked on the development of an internal tool that allowed for simpler and faster investigation of traveller personalisation issues.
My daily routine consisted of attending stand-ups and other team meetings, working on the allocated project, collaborating with my teammates to get help, and gathering feedback regarding my work.

Yes, I was given a lot of freedom in terms of what to do and how I should approach it. The project I was working on did not have any specific requirements, and I was encouraged to suggest my own interpretation, with every idea I had being discussed and evaluated with my manager and my project navigators.

Yes, I have learnt a lot throughout the internship, from technical skills such as how to create an application to soft skills such as communication, teamwork and presentation.

I constantly received support from various people, including my manager and teammates, my mentor, and people outside of my team who gave my feedback on my work. Their support helped me a lot with my learning and project development, allowing me to take the most out of this internship.

The company culture and the general atmosphere felt very friendly and safe. Everyone was always willing to help me with anything I asked for, without me feeling afraid of being judged. I was also very pleased with the work-life balance, as it seemed that employees had enough flexibility in their working hours and were not overwhelmed. Overall, I consider this an amazing experience and a good example of the type of culture I would like to have in the companies I work for in the future.

I greatly enjoyed my internship and found it to be a very valuable experience, especially as it was my first opportunity to work in a role related to my degree. My experience at Expedia gave me a better understanding of what is it like to work in a large company operating across multiple regions. I also had the chance to gain practical experience as a Software Development Engineer and develop a product that will be used internally to improve efficiency.
