Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Taking a Human Centred Design (HCD) approach to the development of sophisticated systems
Supporting the planning and conduct of User Experimentation and trials with military users on prototype through to real weapon system equipment and software.
Carrying out individual research tasks, to provide recommendations and solve problems.
Conducting workspace assessments and anthropometric modelling tasks.
Designing and prototyping Human Computer Interface (HCI) / Human Machine Interface (HMI) concepts.
Supporting the development and application of technologies, such as Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence, in future systems.
Writing reports and creating presentations on areas you’ve been working on.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, you are given a lot of responsibility that gradually increases the further into the placement you get, there is the odd downtime when switching projects but this is expected. You also are given the odd internship tasks but this is also expected and part of the learning process.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes whilst on my placement, I learnt a lot of new skills in all areas of Human Factors as well as engineering. I learnt about Human Centered Design for systems.
I ran User experiments and trials.
I developed on existing computer skills.
Researching was another huge part of my placement that is proving invaluable for my last year at uni.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received more support and guidance than I thought was possible! You get given a buddy multiple managers the main one for your department and then for individual projects. As well as a technical coordinator for your placement so any questions get answered and there is always someone available to help out with anything.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Company culture was great although a little skewed by covid, the general atmosphere was what is expected of an office plenty of resources and great canteen etc.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed my placement immensly! It was everything I wanted and more, cant wait to return to the graduate scheme!

Be yourself practice for the interviews and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions and show lots of passion for the military aspect as well as your given role.
