Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role consists of testing turbochargers. I build up units, as well stripping them down when needed, and fitting them to testing cells so that tests can be run on them. There is work involved on the test cells where I edit files for tests and can manually control the system for tests.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my program very much. I enjoy the science/technical side to my job as well as the engineering mathematics at college. I have learnt many new skills and continue to gain confidence with my decision making and fitting skills. I like that there will always be something new to learn.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt many skills. I have learnt to read new types of data and graphs on the technical side of my job as well as learning new physical skills when fitting and building. Using new tools is a significant new skill I have gained and will continue to develop these skills.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think that there was some slight lack of organization and structure towards the beginning of my apprenticeship, however things have improved since then. I am receiving great training by my work colleagues and slowly getting through the work at college. My NVQ work is also running smoothly and according to plan.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a lot of support from my employer. I have my supervisor and manager within my department whom I can speak to if I come across any issues and they will quickly find solutions to help me. I also receive plenty of support from my colleagues which is very helpful.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have one day a week training at Appris College and here I will be taught the things I need to know in order to complete and pass assignments for my HNC Year One. I think that support could improve slightly as it is a difficult course to take but the director of the college is very supportive and caring of students.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think that it is useful to stretch my knowledge and understand of overall engineering concepts and work. Some of the knowledge I have learnt from college has been useful at my work, for example engineering terms and processes, however the more in-depth work I probably would not need at work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have a certain amount of hours that we spend per year participating in voluntary work for Cummins. This can range from many activities, but usually consists of helping/giving back to the local community around my workplace. There are also lots of networking events that take place in Cummins.

Why?
I have learnt lots of skills that I can take with me throughout the rest of my life. They have also provided the opportunity for me to gain prestigious qualifications that will help me to move forward in life and can provide me various opportunities for my future in the engineering workplace.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
Determination is key and will help you to become the best engineer that you possibly could be. There is always new knowledge to learn and this will continue to encourage you to improve and become a skilled engineer that can take you in many directions. Work hard and hold the concentration to learn and a great career will be made.
