Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
In my role as an electrician I help maintain two structures, ensuring they are mechanically and electrically sound. Often carrying out electrical testing/inspection and finding ways to further improve the reliability and efficiency of the areas in which I work. I also help with street lighting and carrying out repairs.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoyed my apprenticeship. My teachers at college were great and I enjoyed learning new skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Learnt how to work on and install electrical installations. Gained a good understanding of mechanical systems, how they work and how to maintain them.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The course was organised fairly well. Only downside was the changeover of training officers every so often and some of them were hard to communicate with.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I had regular meetings with my employer about how I was doing. Any issues I had they always listened and tried to resolve. One issue I had was not getting enough experience which I needed for the course, but my supervisor was superb in helping me get a different job role which gave me further experience to help me become competent in my role and enable me to complete the remainder of my course.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
This varies on the training officer I had at the time. The last training officer was great and could see I was eager to finish the course and worked with me to get qualified. The training officers I had before weren’t as great unfortunately.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Huge difference. Without the course, I wouldn’t be competent in my role as an electrician. The qualification is essential for the line of work I’m in, mainly to ensure I’m working safely so I don’t risk inuring myself or others. It has also helped me to understand the importance of installing the right equipment in different/special locations.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes.
