Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Costain?
My experience at Costain has been extremely positive and professionally rewarding. Working on the TfL framework has given me hands-on exposure to complex civil engineering works in a live urban environment, allowing me to build strong technical, organisational and communication skills. I have felt well supported by my team, who have consistently encouraged my development, trusted me with meaningful responsibilities, and created an environment where I could learn quickly and confidently contribute to project delivery. Overall, Costain has provided me with a solid foundation in engineering practice, teamwork and safety, and has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
In my role as a Graduate Civil Engineer, my key responsibilities include interpreting design drawings, setting out, monitoring daily progress, and ensuring that works are carried out safely and in line with specifications and programme requirements. I coordinate regularly with subcontractors and site teams, help resolve technical issues on site, contribute to RAMS preparation and reviews, complete site documentation, and support material management and planning activities. I particularly enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the role, the teamwork on site, and the opportunity to see physical progress being made as a result of effective coordination and clear communication. Working on live TfL assets has also given me valuable experience managing works around traffic management, stakeholders and public interfaces.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
I feel that my role allows me to contribute meaningfully to the project, and I have consistently felt valued by the team. I have been trusted with responsibilities that directly support delivery, such as briefing operatives, managing sections of work, and providing accurate technical information to keep activities moving safely and efficiently. My team actively involves me in discussions, encourages my input, and provides constructive guidance that helps me improve. This level of trust and support makes me feel that my contributions matter and that I am an important part of the project team.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
3/5
Overall, the compensation package is fair for a graduate role, and I appreciate the structured salary progression and the benefits offered. I find the training support, professional development opportunities, and access to internal learning resources particularly valuable. The company’s focus on wellbeing, including flexible working options where possible and access to employee assistance programmes, is also beneficial. While there is room for improvement in aligning pay more closely with the cost of living and the demands of site-based work, the overall package still provides a good foundation for early-career development.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
This role has prepared me extremely well for my future career by giving me meaningful, hands-on experience on complex infrastructure works. I have developed strong technical, organisational and communication skills, and gained confidence in managing site activities, engaging with stakeholders, and delivering works safely and efficiently. The exposure to real engineering challenges, combined with guidance from experienced colleagues, has given me a solid understanding of both project delivery and professional expectations. I feel well equipped to progress to more senior responsibilities as I continue my career.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
I have been able to develop a wide range of skills through both on-the-job experience and formal training. Day-to-day site work has strengthened my practical engineering knowledge, problem-solving ability and confidence in coordinating teams. At the same time, structured training sessions, internal courses and support from mentors have helped me build my technical understanding, safety awareness and project management capabilities. The combination of practical exposure and continuous learning has made my development consistent and well-rounded.
