Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I help the Assistant Managers ensure smooth running of the restaurant. This can include making sure everyone has been allocated a job and stays on task. I also make sure the restaurant set-up is complete and on close down procedures are completed fully before we leave at night. I also train new members of staff and look after trial shifts.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy learning the different theories behind management techniques, especially the ones that I usually wouldn't consider using for myself.
I enjoy the self analysis that we are encouraged to do, which makes me question my current ways of working and ask myself if I can do something better in future.
I don't particularly enjoy Zoom sessions as I find it harder to speak up than if I was in the group face-to-face.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed my existing skills of running my own section in the restaurant in terms of managing the flow of service and dealing with complaints and demanding customers.
I have developed my knowledge of wine including taking two industry recognised qualifications (WSET Level 2 and 3) and learnt a lot more about Italian food too.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] has organised the sessions really well. The flow is manageable with regards to the amount of information we are given and he speaks really clearly and is to the point. He is very understanding and I feel that no question is a silly question.
At the start of the sessions it is really clear what we are about to cover in the day.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
I haven't yet spoken to my employer about the course and I am not sure if they are contributing from their end.
In the first week of the course I was asked to obtain a SWOT analysis from a manager at work but he did not complete this for me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have not yet requested a one to one with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] just yet but every session we are offered the opportunity to book one in. I am also sure that if I needed help from [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] in between sessions I could contact him separately and he would be happy to help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I am learning lots of new theories behind management techniques, including some that I had not considered using before. It makes me question my current management style and ask myself if I could be performing better.
It makes me feel more confident that I could tackle future issues armed with the knowledge and techniques that the course has offered me.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Unfortunately there are no social opportunities to get involved in at work. A lot of the staff have been asking for Christmas or Summer parties or evening a private dining event together but this has not happened. Unfortunately if we wanted a social activity for the staff we would be required to organise it ourselves on top of our current workload.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Homegrown Hotels to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is the best hotel in the area to work for and even though it is very hard work and demands a lot of you, you can gain a lot of experience in a fine dining environment and they offer lots of training opportunities such as wine and spirit exams and management apprenticeships.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Homegrown Hotels?
I would tell them to expect long days and to be going over your contracted hours as standard every week.
It is lots of hard work but they should be grateful for the exposure to such a high end hotel and such a large scale operation.
I would say that you will meet lots of different types of people and they should take every opportunity to enjoy the experience.
