Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Carrying out Home Visits to take accurate measurements of a customers kitchen, bathroom or home office.
Planning and designing the kitchen, bathroom or home office to the customers requirements, while making the best use of the space and keeping in mind the investment they wish to make.
Presenting the design to the customer, making any adjustments as necessary and proceeding to the sale.
Liaising with Installers.
Dealing with general enquiries.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
I found the whole process really streamlined, taking my knowledge and skills gently through the various steps.
I've had really great support and encouragement from everyone involved and plenty of check-ins to make sure I'm doing ok. Great to have other apprentices to speak to as well.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Plenty! Although learning to design was probably the biggest new skill I learnt.
The CAD training was really excellent. I knew virtually zero about how to plan in CAD before this apprenticeship and now I'm really enjoying designing and planning people's spaces. Adding little personalised touches to the final design really brings the designs to life too.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well structured. As I mentioned previously, it seemed very smooth my transition through the various skills, building on my knowledge.
It was very well organised with information, training and meetings with various suppliers and key people in the company.
The Personal Development Plan worked really well for me. Being able to fill out a "diary" , completing actions as required and keeping track of what was needed next.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Tonnes!
From the very beginning of the process and applying for the course, all of my managers and peers have been very supportive.
I've been encouraged all the way. And they have always been there to answer my hundreds of questions along the way!
Moving into my new role was also really smooth and I was given great opportunities to use my new skills.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Again, plenty. They recognised the workload involved, taking the time to find out what was involved at every stage. And then gave me the flexibility to be able to work on assignments, advice on where to find information, opportunities to practice new skills. Again, checking in with regular reviews to see how I was getting on and how I was feeling.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I'm putting all of my new skills and knowledge into practice every day!
Because of the way the course was structured, learning new skills and acquiring new knowledge every step of the way, I felt very ready for my new role.
I understand much better the industry I work in, in terms of competitors, suppliers, trends, sustainability.
I also have the knowledge of plenty more resources for when I come across a new challenge or have another question.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Yes there are from time to time.
There have been events such as cycling from store to store to raise money for charity. Christmas dinners.
There are regularly cakes and treats in the canteen that someone has made and bought in, or others buy cakes or chocolates.
It would be great to have more social events to get involved with and certainly if they are raising funds for worthy causes.
It would also be beneficial to meet up with my peers from other stores on a regular basis to exchange stories, successes, tips, hints etc. perhaps even on a team building day.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Travis Perkins plc to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Amazing support.
I'm over 50 and was given this fantastic opportunity to re-train to do something which I thought I would really enjoy and in fact I'm absolutely loving it!
I'm so grateful for the opportunity. Grateful for the on-going support.
I'm looking forward to my next apprenticeship or course already!
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins plc?
The opportunities for training and devlopment are first-class.
I've been given so much encouragement.
I'm really happy that I've completed my apprenticeship and am now really enjoying and thriving in my new role.
I'd encourage everyone to explore apprenticeships as, in my case, it built my knowledge alongside my (then) current role, preparing me really well for my new role.
