Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Learning all aspects of footwear manufacturing (clicking, closing, lasting and finishing), as well as industry history, pattern making and giving factory tours.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoyed the programme - I'm happiest when learning something new, and there's plenty to get stuck into with this. I will say, as with many factory based jobs, it can get very repetitive at times (sometimes you'll be doing the same job for several days in a row) but for the most part I was rotated round the different parts of the factory every two weeks, which kept things interesting. We has classroom learning once a week also. It can be hard with long hours and limits with the time you can take off. The part that really made it great, was the people I worked with - there was a great group of folks in the factory at the time I was there.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I learnt a lot of new skills! By the time I completed my year-long apprenticeship I could create a pair of shoes/boots from start to finish, including pattern cutting, cutting and sewing all pieces of leather, leather treatment, lasting and finishing. I later specialised in closing (sewing) the uppers of footwear, which to me was the most varied role. I was a regular part of production for eyelets, attaching backstraps, and other structural sewing.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I felt there could have been more of a road map in terms of what you'd learn and when set out at the start of the course in terms of the factory aspect, but the classroom learning went smoothly with all topics outlined. The weekly classroom sessions helped balance out the learning in factory time. I felt I could always go to my supervisors to ask for clarification, help in setting up goals/targets, or voicing areas I wanted to learn more in.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
One of the biggest factors around working in financial support - whilst the apprenticeship payed above the legally required amount at the time, it is very hard to live off when also trying to cover rent and travel in this rural area. I think generally speaking (not just at DMs) factory work is undervalued and under-payed, given the incredible skillsets the people that work there have. Another factor was the social aspect - you work with some incredible people, but as a young person moving to such a rural area it can be hard to find a community outside work - I feel there could be more done to support social connections. Good aspects of support included employee mental health care, Dr Martens is great at openly encouraging and providing care here. There's also great support in terms of company culture around open door policy etc. I felt it was easy to raise issues with my supervisor or managers, and that I would be heard and given the time.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
We had two tutors - one from our partner college and work who worked for Dr Martens directly, so was always on site. This generally meant we could raise questions or get additional understanding and support when needed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It has been a number of years since I completed my apprenticeship training and a lot of the skills I learnt still help me to this day, even if I'm not using them directly. I am now in an office based role making all kinds of decisions for the business, which are often influenced or given a better understanding of because of my time in the factory or in the classroom. Immediately after completing the apprenticeship I worked in the factory, directly using the skills I'd learn to complete my daily jobs of sewing the boots/shoes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
I was in the scheme pre-covid, and felt there were some social options at the factory but could have been more, especially in getting to know other teams within the business. It's difficult in the rural area of Wollaston and the surrounding villages if you're not local, but we did have team trips to the pub, bowling and the company took part in Rock Solid Race, for which Dr Martens provided exercise classes with a trainer once a week after work on site. The company culture group also used to provide yoga classes at times, and social events throughout the year (Halloween, Christmas etc) - I'm unsure if this still happens.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Dr. Martens to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I overall really enjoyed the scheme, the people I worked with, the skills I leant, and being part of such a cool brand. I had to work really hard, but I have had some really cool career opportunities following the course and loved getting hands on and more connected to the boots and shoes I wear.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dr. Martens?
Be yourself, know going in that it will be hard/repetitive at times, and be upfront about all areas of the business you want to learn about that will tie into your time in the factory and classroom. Make it your own and enjoy it!
