Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
2/5
As an apprentice you set out to learn different production operations ahead of graduating in whichever part of the factory you will be working in after the apprenticeship. You assist primarily on production on lower grade jobs while attending college once every other week. Further into the apprenticeship, you begin to train on other jobs so as to complete your final project with minimal help.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
2/5
I have had a mixed experience - my expectations of the apprenticeship differed a lot from the reality of it. The actual work itself can be enjoyable, but as always the people that you work with make or break the job. I enjoy learning about the industry and getting to work with my hands, but politely put, you are sold a dream.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
2/5
I've learnt numerous new skills having never worked in this industry before. My practical skills include clicking and closing as well as lasting methods which I had no experience of prior to the apprenticeship. I have also developed existing skills that I brought forward from my last job, primarily resilience to other people.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The training provider (Northampton College) is pretty unreliable and the course seems to be underfunded and understaffed. Training isn't as well structured as you would expect in a company as large as Dr. Martens but when you do get someone willing to train you, the quality of teaching is good.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
Private healthcare is a benefit of the job which not many employers offer. The company seems to be advocating for greater wellbeing in the workplace with the use of mental health first aiders, however the factory is definitely still very much behind in comparison with the rest of the company.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
You don't receive much support at all. No one at the college even knows who you are. You're lucky if you ever get a response to your emails. The turnover of staff also affects the training of apprentices as they are left without a teacher or given a substitute who doesn't know the course.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification is somewhat useful as it helps you to identify and understand issues in production. It's helpful to be able to view the production process as a whole in order to avoid problems further down the line. In general, many people do the job without the qualification without issues.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
There aren't any opportunities for things like this at Dr. Martens. There are occasionally social events such as an anniversary event for the company. There are usually Christmas events but due to covid this hasn't been the case recently. Other than those there are no social events for staff.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Dr. Martens to a friend?
No
Why?
Opportunities for career progression are few and far between and it isn't really encouraged. The general working environment isn't particularly positive. As with most factories, hours are long and holiday is set 3-4 times a year leaving little freedom to choose time off outside of those set times.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dr. Martens?
Be yourself when applying, be honest about your expectations and your personal limitations so you know whether or not the job is for you. Be open minded and do your research on the brand. Get used to working with your hands and performing to set goals. Get ready to be on your feet all day!
