Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
I spent one week in the tax team and one week in the litigation team, during which I got the chance to join in on calls - such as one between Gibson Dunn and another law firm regarding tax concerns pertaining to a restructuring deal - carry out research tasks - such as drafting a Brexit update - and have conversations with a range of trainees, associates and partners from different practice areas.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
The great thing about Gibson Dunn is that it has a 50:50 split in terms of transactional and litigation work – a feature that is highly unique for a City law firm. This means that trainees get exposure to distinct areas of the law and get to really experience both sides of the work and how they interact.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Throughout my vacation scheme I really came to appreciate how important it is to not only understand the law and complex legal concepts yourself, but to be able to explain and convey them in a coherent and simple manner to others, whether it be clients or other lawyers and co-workers.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Gibson Dunn's culture is one of the main things that drew me to apply to the firm. What I initially experienced at the Open Day, and what the Summer Vacation Scheme only confirmed, was that Gibson Dunn has a very unique non-hierarchical and friendly culture which sees collaboration amongst trainees, associates and partners alike.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed my Vacation Scheme at Gibson Dunn, as - while I already knew that it was one of the most prestigious law firms and involved in some really interesting, challenging and often multi-jurisdictional matters - working alongside, and having conversations with, various trainees, associates and partners, confirmed that it also had a truly friendly firm culture and was a place in which I felt like I would genuinely fit in.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP
If there is one tip I would give to others applying to Gibson Dunn, and law firms generally, it would be to really research the firm and attend networking events and Open Days in order to get a feeling for the firm, the work it does and the people you would be doing it with. It really does come down to choosing to apply the firm you think you will fit in best with.
