Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
My vacation scheme was conducted online. I sat in on client meetings and assisted in doing basic research and proofreading for my supervisors. The firm also held a number of coffee chats with lawyers from various practice areas, and assigned us certain research, drafting and presentation tasks to test our competencies.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Learning about the firm's different practice areas allowed me to consider specialisms which I had previously overlooked. Having the opportunity to speak to lawyers from the firm's various overseas offices also gave me a greater insight into how they operated synergistically with the London office, and led me to consider possible opportunities to further develop my career in the future.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Through the drafting and presentation assignments set by the firm, I learnt to develop a keener eye for the needs of the client. I also had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a number of experienced lawyers, who helped me develop my understanding of different practice areas, particularly with regards to competition and technology law.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Everyone was extremely welcoming, and there was no sense that hierarchy was strictly enforced - I was given the opportunity to speak personally to a practice group leader from a different office simply by expressing an interest in that practice. Both of my supervisors were proactive and encouraging, and all feedback was fair and delivered with the clear intention of helping me improve.

Have a clear idea of why you want to apply to Gibson Dunn in particular as opposed to another city firm - what about the work or culture draws you to the firm? Before going into the interview, have a good idea of the current economic climate and any significant market movements, as well as the firm's recent deals. Finally, don't be afraid to express your opinion during interviews!
