Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an IT Support worker who aids the helpdesk, and will move towards bigger projects. It involves using a ticketing system to answer queries. I have learnt a lot about the operating system and my applications security. Working with databases is the main part of my role in the company.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I absolutely love my programme. I think the culture at my job is amazing. The support that is given to me as an individual in my team, is great. I hear that support from other teams too. I think the company really values how difficult things can be, especially starting from scratch. The company still has traditional modern values that have built up skills in our parents and grandparents. It is really appreciated. I think that now-a-days, companies can be very reluctant to training. They are extremely fair and give you every resource to grow, so there is no excuses, you have to be happy in your role, which isn't taught.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt lots of knowledge and technical skills around how technology hangs together. I understand a lot more about how the database hangs with the linux operating system and the applications.
The got an internal training course as well which boosted with my job role. I know that i will be getting more as technology adapts.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
In my team, there is a lot of organisation and structure to my work. There is a common place for all types of work and queries. It is good the amount of money they invest in good systems.
QA wise, there could definitely be a lot of improvements. Classes aren't always visual.. You have to wait till a conversation with you assessor for a small list of classes. I think there should be more detail about what's in these classes too.
Overall, we have been meeting regularly though, and this is structured for the programme.
Apprenticeship meetings / induction is also structured.
Training is structured
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My manager is my main support from the organisation. But i know if i was to reach out to HR, I would get the same support. I have heard some members of the apprenticeship have had support with understanding if they have issues with dyslexia.
My manager trains me/helps me day to day/encourages a great working environment in my team. And my team are the same, they call out when a resource isnt being used. They support you a lot. They also understand that your health is important and we work prime time for doctors. Other jobs, would try to mitigate how long we spent at the doctors, by asking for notes. There is a trust and understand as we build relationships.
In another light, I don't think this would be possible without the culture that the CEO has created for the company. The company culture really feels like a team and everyone I know acts with the business in mind.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I think once covid is over the classes should be back in the office though. In theory, we are working with theoretical equipment/lacking in relationships we should have. It's a shame we have missed this experience. I can understand this isn't the providers fault
Its hard when you are learning to sit at home on a pc. I think when someone doesn't understand something, we shouldn't just retell them in the same worded paragraph.. it would be ideal to be in a classroom where we can use a whiteboard, screen share some software to a class, be next to them, and enjoy more discussions. I think we should be encouraging in depth teaching to push our knowledge, and not one teaching that fits all
I think more encouragement for the office is ideal as i know it seems to be choice right now
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I think that there were a few things that helped but sometimes felt that whatever was easiest for the provider was better. I think some things felt like ticks, which is probably what most people want. I think there is a part to that which people miss, and that is upskilling our knowledge so we can become the experts we need to be. I think managers and students need to just know this and be firm about what we want.
I think the courses are good but they really should be more challenging. But overall, the networking course was really in depth and taught me a lot. As well as SQL.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of apprenticeship meetings that we can get involved with for networking. There are also social / work events such as Challenge 2021 and Hackathon. These are really great challenges that helped me meet lots of like minded apprentices and graduates. Additionally, you get to interact with other big brands such as Google/IBM. I personally loved my google metal straw merch

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
100%. I try convince everyone to get a job here. Every other job I've had before this, the company don't appreciate you, they don't upskill you, and I believe there have been many times where I have been taken advantage of / been treated with disrespect because of my anxiety. In the culture, it is really about building relationships and doing the right thing. The company is inclusive and if you show how much you want to be there in how you act, they will help you become a valuable member of the business. And they treat you well
What I say to everyone is. You aren't allowed to come into work and be horrible.
It is a professional culture. It is probably the normal that we don't always receive these days. You aren't seen as a number you are seen as a valuable resource
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group?
This isn't just another job, this is an opportunity for a great career. Show how much it means to you, show how much you want it. I think also having a great attitude, as it just impacts others if you don't. Be helpful, be kind, and you will go far. I think this has to be natural though
