Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My day-to-day involves attending meetings with my line manager and team, completing any apprentice work that needs done, working on learning activities (i.e. tutorials/projects) and working on any tasks that I have been given to do. My responsibilities are very minimal at this point but there is always something that I can do to keep myself busy and learning. I have had some coding lessons with members of my team which have been really useful and will soon be attending virtual classes setup by the apprenticeship.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy this programme, I find it very interesting and even though I am just starting out I can be working on something different every day. I have been placed in a great team and my line manager makes sure I am doing okay and I can ask for help if I am stuck on anything. The apprentice team also set up different virtual sessions and meetups throughout the year which have been really great to attend. This is a great programme to be on if you are interested in a certain career but don't have the experience that would normally be required.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have mostly been working on my coding skills - primarily Java at the moment - and have been given a lot of resources to help with that as I had no experience when starting the apprenticeship. My team are also very helpful and have had a hand in teaching me as well and I am always reminded that I can ask for help whenever I need it. One thing that could be improved is how long it took to get the classes by the apprenticeship set up as my first one is 6+ months into the apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
We had a really great induction and the apprentice team were very helpful and informative and let us know how they would support us during the apprenticeship and they continue to organise events for the apprentices throughout the year. My line manager provides a lot of support as well and has regular catch-ups to talk about my progress and if I need any assistance. The majority of the programme for me is self study and I am slowly being introduced to picking up tasks in my team to give me some experience and so I can take part in meetings. I think that the only let down comes from QA and the training which I assumed would be quite intensive but its just a few week long classes throughout the year so I am very fortunate that my team are keen to train me in other ways. Apart from that I have nothing bad to say about the company as they have been very accommodating.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have received a lot of support from my employer. I think I have been put in a great team and I have a great manager who offers a lot of support. I have also been given a mentor who is in my team who I can contact for any technical questions and they have also been very active in teaching some coding lessons. If I have any problems, whether its a technical question or a hardware issue my team have been very helpful and have been quick to sort the problem. I think the general attitude towards my apprenticeship from my team has been very positive and I have never been made to feel like I am in the way as they are very understanding about the fact I have joined with no experience.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I have a QA assessor who I have regular meetings with, some are just catch-ups whilst other meetings are to sign off on coursework that I have completed. They have been good at communicating through email about setting up classroom dates etc. They are also available to contact if I have any questions about coursework.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
All of the classes that I have been enrolled in should be very useful to my role. I am very excited to start with the classes as I think that they will help me become more confident in my role. I have heard from other apprentices in a similar role that the classroom sessions are really useful and interactive.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I haven't taken part in any extra-curricular activities but I know that there are a lot of employee led networks available to join and that they cover a wide range of topics and activities. Something worth mentioning is that there has been a mystery meet up organised by the apprentice team where once a month you join a zoom call with some other colleagues just to have a chat which I think is a good idea and a great casual networking resource.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend NatWest Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Yes, I would recommend NatWest to a friend. I think that they are a great company to work for and I have been shown nothing but support. I think that the apprentice programme is also fantastic as it is suitable to anyone who is interested in a career with the bank whether they are looking for their first job or wanting to switch careers completely without needing the experience normally required for the job.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest Group?
I would recommend researching NatWest, there is a lot of information on the website that covers the hiring process and the apprenticeship as well as company values. Lookup the job role too as it will provide some good talking points during the interview. My interview was very relaxed, it was mostly competency based questions followed by a chat where I could ask questions, so just practice using the STAR method with some common interview question scenarios.
