Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Housekeeper. I clean rooms at my hotel. Remove old linen, replace with fresh linen, make beds to brand standard, replace dirty towels, put teas and coffees and mugs and glasses in each room, vaccum rooms, mop, wash the bath out and the sink, fill dirty linen bags and take them all down to ground floor. Get rid of the rubbish which has been removed from the rooms.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I think the apprenticeship is great, I am learning new things on it. I also feel like I take more pride in my job as I feel like once I learn more I can add more value to the business. If I didn’t have a family to look after and was single and younger of course I would enjoy it more As I finished my degree 10 years ago and now my memory doesn’t seem to be as good as it was before I had kids so when I read the information it takes longer to sink in. However, the work isn’t too much at the moment as I have only just started my apprenticeship so I am hoping to enjoy it more as I progress further.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes I have learnt a lot of new skills, I work at a very fast pace now. I have learnt how work to tight deadlines as we are given 24 mins per room to clean which is tight deadline and we need to try and stick to this. I have also started to learn reception as part of my apprenticeship and learnt how to cut key cards.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
To be honest when I first startEd it I was so overwhelmed and didn’t have a clue what was going on it all seemed too much and now that I have had a couple of meetings with my coach Beth things have fallen into place and she has really helped me to feel more organised as she tells me exactly what needs doing by when and she also plans my meetings with her and makes it more convenient by having them online and also she has explained the my life and learning portal to me so because of this I think it’s well organised because you work on a module at a time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
2/5
My employer has been good. They are hoping to get me on reception more so I can learn it as I’ve only had one 1 hour session on it so far but our job is very busy and it’s difficult to find time to do reception out of my normal working hours because I am expected to come in 1 hour before my shift starts to learn reception but as I have school run to do it’s very difficult and I would have preferred it if it was during my normal working hours and given less rooms to clean. Also the apprenticeship work has to be done at home which can take up a lot of time and I fall behind on my cooking and cleaning on my days off and also don’t get paid for it
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have a lot of support from my training provider, my coach is always available for me to contact at any time via email or phone as phone makes it much easier. She is also extremely friendly and patient which Is what makes me enjoy the apprenticeship. She also makes things seem less complicated for me
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It’s too early for me to say yet as I’ve not long started the apprenticeship but so far I’ve learnt how to cut key cards which is useful because when a guest leaves I can check which room they departed from and I can pass this information on to housekeeping who can then clean the rooms which makes it easier for them so I feel like I can perform better as I am learning other skills which most of the other housekeepers don’t have
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
There are no extra curricular activities that I am aware of.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Whitbread plc to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Well I think it’s a fun place to work, people are nice too and pay is decent. Also you have the opportunity to learn different things if you want to.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Whitbread plc?
Be open minded and willing to learn new things because you never know where you might end up one day. From a part time job to maybe a hotel manager it’s not that difficult to work your way up but you have to be willing to work hard and have a passion for what you’re doing. Don’t be afraid
